I am losing my cobra insurance in a couple of months and I am scared. I have been focused more on my dad and now that he has passed my own reality its starting to hit me.

How do you get insurance when you are this sick and can't afford it? I haven't been able to work for almost two years.

I have applied for disablity and am waiting for a court date. I was told it could take 8-12 months and if I do get it I will only get $800.00 a month.

I don't know where to start....just overwhelmed.

I am sure there are folks out there in the same boat...maybe someone has some ideas .Grateful if you do. thanks much

I know that in California, if you meet the income qualifications, you can get free insurance through the state.

I think it's called Medi-Cal or Medi-Care...I forget which one...one is for old people and one is for very low to no income people.

Would that be a possiblility for you?

hi minerva,

regarding ssdi application, etc., did you use SUPPORT FORUM's post at top by MINOUCAT where we have extensive info there to win 1st time on 1st step?

you said you're waiting for an admin law judge hearing; takes 1-1.5 yrs; depending on which states that are so BACKLOGGED!

but meantime, go there and see what you can put together for additional info that they might reconsider ... there's a special name for this and conniemc is our EXPERT on this.

so read conniemc's info good; she is a NON-LAWYER representing folks in ssdi cases!! 1st hand experience as a recipient, etc.

when did you file for ssdi? WHEN APPROVED and when "they determine starting date", IF IT'S 2 YEARS OR LONGER, your MEDICARE will become effective immediately ... so you will have insurance thru them.

it's a start; so to me, that's the most important part getting more SUPPORTIVE INFO FROM YOUR DRS.... read the residual function capacity, rfc, info good ok!

best wishes to you [Smile] [group hug] [kiss]

Unfortunaly, I can't get any of the above.

I am too young for medicare and too "rich" for medical or SSI.

I have enough money with my fathers estate to last a year maybe two depending on my health care costs.

You have to have dependents or be bascially out on the street to be elligible for government help.

I just don't want to have one trip to the ER and be unable to pay rent afterwards.

I have never been scared about money or taking care of myself. I always knew I would do whatever it took....wait tables..live in the back of my truck if necessary.

But now I need to live in a comfortable quiet place and doing any type of work seems out of reach.

I am sort of whinning now please forgive me. Its just a frighting place to be .
