Took first of tetracycline (Dr D's abx challenge -found on Web- 500mg x 3 x 30 before WB repeat) last night. Two hours later knew tetra was working from increase flow of urine before bed. Putting on bed socks (anklet, two pairs - many pairs left over from running) I notice a bright red oval (9mm x 5mm) on the lower innerish (2 cm in from major tendon) surface of the tibia just above the medial malleolus.

Location where a tick, picked up on a trail while running, might have hidden under a sock. In the case of trail marathons up to 5 hours attachment time, 50 miles up to 9 hours and 100 miles up to 25 hours.

Close examination indicates it consists of a series of larger red dots around the periphery and an overall red background. The surface texture is rough compared to the surrounding skin.

Call it a type of "herx" if you will.

Now, be sure to go OFF antibiotics for at least 10 days before retesting.

I had two EM rashes show up at the same time (one on each inner thigh near my knees, unrelated to the area where a tick has bitten me, as far as I know--the bite I know of was behind my ear).

This happened while I was on IV Cefotaxime a few months ago.

Yes, for me the red area's surface was rough and circular (but broken up, not a perfect circle, more oval, too).

And for me the red part felt as if it had been burned, scalded.

I have never had an EM rash before and I've been on and off oral abx for three years now so it was quite surprising to me.

My LLMD agreed that it was a herx and told me that it's fairly common.

Took a hi-res macro shot yesterday. Tis on the computer. But I have hated every photo editing software program I have ever been exposed to. Since '95 or '96. So will take time. Already spent a couple of hours on it and so am now in a very bad mood.

Here is a link to a macro shot of the EM.

EM .jpg link

And according to the;
University of Maryland Medical Center
Tetracycline
Pharmacodynamics/Kinetics:
Time to peak, serum: Oral: 2-4 hours

So I guess the first 500mg cap could have caused the EM/herx!
