My mom recently said that she woke up today and tried to swallow some vitamins and she could feel them hurting all the way down. Her throat felt very constricted for about an hour. She could feel every time she swallowed.

I have read other complaints about this, so I am guessing it is related to her tick-bourne infections. In your experience, which infection do you think causes this? Lyme, bart, babs, or something else?

Thanks,

tickbattler

I think Babesia. For me at least. Came out full force during babs tx.

I have expereinced that and more...the inability to even initiate a swallow. Now it is mostly what your mom has described.

I would say either lyme or babs could cause this symptom. I lean more toward lyme and it being neurological.

After an incident in a restaurant requiring my son's quick thinking and knowledge of the Heimlich maneuver which saved my life, our doc sent me for a radiologist's eval.

They found problems with my swallowing process. So I have been going to a speech therapist to learn techniques, exercises, massage therapies, etc. It helps a lot.

One easy idea: tuck your chin under when you swallow...keeps the airway closed to prevent choking. If you can't swallow, sit up straight, change head position and relax...it will come and won't hurt you to delay a bit. Stressing out causes trouble with swallowing.

I always keep plenty of water or liquid handy when eating. I avoid textures that are troublesome. I try to sit up straight and concentrate.

My pills require much water to get down. Sometimes I take some soymilk....it soothes my throat.

My doc says this is all part of the neuro problems I have from the various infections I am fighting.

DOCTOR: "I don't think you are sick."
PATIENT: "We are all entitled to our opinions. I don't think you are a doctor."

TB

I won't take the chance anymore after too many scares. I open my capsules (herbs) and put the ingredients in applesauce. (I am a much happier camper)

There are vitamins that come in capsule form. I think the problem may stem from Bells Palsy of the gut which slows down peristalis and would affect the throat muscles as well.

Gael

Type or google Dr. Virginia Sherrs excellent article on Bells Palsy of The Gut.

Farraday,
Thanks for the ideas. I will try the chin tuck, as I often choke on air and water. Being in a hurry aggravates choking in my experience.

I have read Dr. Sherr's excellent articles and have many of the symptoms she describes.
