Wondering if any of you have been diagnosed with allergies to things you were never allergic to before once you started treating Lyme.

Just trying to figure out the likelihood of my hives and throat closing being a new allergy to food or substance other than the abx that I was on.

I've only ever had seasonal allergies in the past and have never had any allergy testing done, so I don't have a pre-Lyme point of reference.

Thanks,
Aimee

Aimee - yes, me. Been on abx since spring and this year for the first time ever I have had appalling 'hay fever'. All summer and still got it. Some days it almost incapacitated me. In the past an odd sniffle here and ther but this year I nearly sneezed my whole face off. Dont know if its coincidence or not. But I am sick of it.
Best to you,,,, Liz D.

Since starting treatment I have been diagnosed with allergies (or "high sensitivity") to about 40 foods. I have never had food allergies before.

I had to stop antibiotics 4 months ago due to this and other gut issues.

I have recently been able to tolerate some of these foods now...my allergist thinks that over time most, if not all of these food allergies will clear up.

My seasonal allergies were so much better while I was on antibiotics...almost completely gone. Unfortunately, now they have come back full force...I just can't win!

I have never had allergies in the past, but am prety sure that I have developed some food allergies. I am waiting for testing.

I was unable to determine if it was my abx or my food. Stopped abx and still have the throat closing sensation.....so, by reason of deduction, it must be food.

Interesting about the new food allergies SoSublyme - did your allergist give you an explanation as to how Lyme is affecting your body that would cause the new allergies and also why he/she believes they will clear up? Very curious about this.

feelfit - I have wondered since I got back from the ER if the hives and the throat closing up was really from an allergy. It was perfect timing for a herx - just over three weeks from the last one. Now I am confused as to whether this was really an allergic reaction to a med or food or something else or if it was just part of the way my body is herxing.

This disease continues to baffle and frustrate the daylights out of me.

Thoughts?

Hi feelfit,
I thought you had attributed your throat closing to babesia? Or do you think the babesia is making you more allergic to foods now?
Thanks,

Hi Aimee,

My llmd described my problem as "leaky gut syndrome". My understanding is that it results from damage to the intestinal lining.

As a result, the intestines can't properly filter needed nutrients and other biological substances.

Some bacteria, toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats and waste are "leaked" through the intestines and into the bloodstream.

This then triggers an autoimmune reaction that can lead to probs like bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivies, joint pain and rashes.

Leaky gut can be caused by antibiotics and other meds, chronic inflammation, excessive alcohol consumption and compromised immunity.

I'm treating it with some success by taking a long antibiotic break, taking lots of L-Glutamine (it coats the intestines), Fish Oil (for anti-inflammatory effects) and probiotics.

After a while off antibiotics my llmd (and my allergist) think that my gut will naturally heal itself. I can feel the difference already, but still have a little ways to go.
