Nature's Mold Rx: the Non-Toxic Solution to Toxic Mold
by Edward R. Close, PhD and Jacquelyn Close, RA; Published in 2007; $25.50 at Amazon

I've only scanned through the book and read specific parts, not the whole thing. So, I won't be able to answer many questions at this point. I can use the index and try to find specific topics addressed in the book but that's about it.

The book cites 3 main weapons against indoor toxic mold: Thieves Essential Oil Blend (referred to as EOB2 in the book - a proprietary Young Living mixture); Thieves Household Cleaner, and a Cold-Air Diffuser (or 1 diffuser for about 1,000 square feet).

Obviously, removal of the problem causing the mold and contaminated material will be necessary for any permanent fix. This can be done professionally, or if great care is taken and depending on the circumstances, homeowner's can do remediation themselves.

Much of the book is dedicated to case studies and then the information is compiled into tables which are quite impressive. Much effort was made to document data before and after treatment, including all types of mold found in each case and the percentage of SRE (Spore Removal Efficiency) for each species of mold (30 or 40 species are included - so many I'd never heard of). Many types of mold were eradicated 100%! Stachybotrys had an average SRE of 99.78%.

On another thread, PB4 asked me:

quote:
When you get your new book, would you please advise whether Close's protocol kills mold to stop spores or eliminates residual mycotoxins. I'd love to know and I don't anticipate getting the book right now. I know there is a problem with mold in my basement. I cannot afford to have professionals to fix it. Thanks.

Mycotoxins are discussed briefly, as well as MVOCs (microbial volatile organic compounds). Using the index, I haven't found any information about dealing with mycotoxins directly or MVOCs.

In fact, this book is about getting rid of mold spores to eliminate the source of ill health. At a glance, it does not address residual health problems once the contamination is removed. That is beyond the scope of the book.

INHO, even if you are unable to remove the source of the mold problem, you could minimize your exposure to molds and their toxins by infusing the Thieves oil until such time as full remediation is feasible.

Here are a few quotes and I'll leave it at that:

quote:
EOB2 removes mold spores from the air. This blend of essential oils does not just kill mold spores, it actually removes mold spores, both living and dead, from the air.

Although additional research is required, the bulk samples collected provide strong evidence that the Close Protocol is effective for both porous and non-porous materials.

Case studies indicate this treatment provides a residual effect that inhibits future growth of mold for up to five months.

Case-study participants reported improvements in their health while following the Close Essential Oil Protocol.

EOB2 is much more user-friendly, eco-friendly, and pet-friendly than all other currently available treatments, and may be used on a daily basis as a preventative.

No other treatment currently available provides this level of protection without costly or poisonous drawbacks.

To our knowledge, this is the only mold-remediation or mold-treatment option available that can be used as a preventative in the home or office building for long periods of time.....

[From a comment by a user]:
``We arranged for ....professionally removed.... by a specialist right away. But, even before the contractor was able to accomplish this, in fact, within the first day of using Thieves oil treatment, my daughter experienced a big improvement in her symptoms......''

Thank you for posting.

So will doing those things REPLACE getting mold remediation?

Or would you be doing these things in addition to mold remediation?

For example, if you have a basement that flooded, and inside the walls there is mold (regardless of whether you see it on the visible part of the wall), you'd have to remove the moldy wood or moldy drywall, right? Or would you have to like, open up the wall and spray it all down with Thieves? Or would just having thieves in the room penetrate through the wall?

I am definitely assuming the thieves would take care of anything airborne, but I have been wondering about like, the hidden gobs of mold some people might have. Would just this protocol handle that too?

Thank you!!!!

Hoosiers, remediation to some extent will always be necessary for a permanent fix. And that's all going to depend on exactly what type of materials have been damaged and to what extent.

It's possible your specific questions can be answered at that website. I wasn't aware of the website at all until after I got the book. I'm sure the book addresses this but I've not gotten that far.

Even though the Thieves protocol doesn't replace remediation, if it can radically reduce the number of mold spores in the air, where is the downside of STARTING with that until there are big $$$ for remediation? Especially if one's health is being compromised!

And some people don't even know where the mold is coming from - they just know that they have it. It isn't always easy to FIND the problem, and all that takes time.

At least that's my take on it.

Thanks for the info! I have not checked out the website yet.

I don't actually have mold in my current place, but it is something I'm trying to stay aware of, because we will be moving in less than a year.

And I was just kind of curious about how it all works. A lot of times there are moldy basements where I live, because the houses are pretty old, so it is good to know.

I don't envy you, Hoosiers. Moving, that is.

Though my older house has problems, at least I know what 95% of them ARE. When it comes to this kind of thing, surprises can be painful and expensive.

If you move, you might look into one of those insurance policies that covers anything that breaks or goes wrong for a certain period after you move in. They used to be reasonable in price and could be worth the cost. I doubt mold issues would be covered but pipe failures and leaks that can cause mold might be. Just a thought.

I hope the move is a positive experience for you!

Update: So glad I bought this book!

Two things that strike me as particularly amazing.

The first is that these people started from scratch. Literally. There were no papers or studies or bodies of evidence showing that essential oils could be used to eliminate mold in buildings. They simply wondered if it could possibly work, and designed a couple of `true to good science' experiments to see what would happen. I get the distinct impression that they were as stunned as anyone by the results.

The second amazing thing is that, if anything happened at all, one might expect certain essential oils to kill mold spores. But even so, dead mold spores can be just as troublesome as live spores when it comes to health problems from mold. So, simply killing mold wouldn't necessarily generate a lot of excitement.

But that isn't what happened, as all the independent lab reports clearly show. Not only does this blend of oils kill mold spores, but it actually eliminates them from the air.

This raises the questions of ``how does it do that?'' and ``where do the spores go?'' The simple answer is that they don't know for sure. The data gathered suggests that spores are broken down or `digested' somehow by the essential oils. It appears that there might be one species of mold - out of about 40 species found, tested, and treated - that is a bit more difficult to `digest' or takes longer to disappear.

One final note is that once the causes and sources of mold have been cleaned up, the effects of diffusing the oil can last weeks - up to 5 months in the case studies. So, the residual effects are pretty impressive, especially when compared to toxic bleach and fungicides which only prevent mold for a short time. To be safe, though, it is recommended that the oil be diffused on a regular basis, like several hours per week - there are different suggestions to choose from.

For Sensitive People : There is one case study in the book where the woman of the house was extremely sensitive to the Thieves oil blend being diffused. During the first treatment (diffusing for 24 hours), she had to leave her home and stay elsewhere during that 24 hours that the diffusers were running. Oddly enough, however, she reported that she was able to return to her home within one hour after the diffusers were turned off! Even more surprising is that she subsequently lost her extreme sensitivity to the oils and had no difficulty diffusing the oils for short periods of time in her home after that first 24 hours!

So there's hope with this even for those who are extremely sensitive to essential oils or other substances.

I'm not sure exactly WHEN I'll get started with this. I found that there is a mold remediation company 50 miles away, so depending on what they say when I talk to them, I may have some professional testing done before I begin diffusing the oils. (I'll have to decide how important that is in my situation.) I'll have to gather up a few bottles of oil and at least one diffuser - possibly two - and hope I can put them someplace where the cats won't bother them. Anyway, I'll see where I'm at with the $$ a little ways down the road and decide which way I want to go ......

Anybody with a mold problem would do well to give this protocol a second look. Either get the book, go to the website referenced in previous post, or both. You could save yourself a lot of money and spare yourself exposure to some nasty chemicals.

Also, many thanks to TerryK who has shared some of her experiences with Thieves Oil and mold problems in other threads.
