My new llmd put me on 600 mg rifampin daily for bartonella two months ago and almost immediately I started losing weight, down about ten pounds and have noticed that I am having alot of sleeping issues, cannot sleep well, very hyper and aggitated. Is this a herx or a side affect of rifampin. What other drug is good for bart? Linda

Can't help you with the weight loss issue. I did take Rifampin along with Omniceff. I had a killer headache the first week. I have had sleep issues throughout my course of Lyme and Lyme treatment. Zoloft help me with the aggitation/anger I experienced.

I was unable to sleep because my sleep meds didn't work when I took this medicine. It also gave me lots of other side effects. Some people say that they adjust after a while. I did not adjust.

Bart treatment always gives me sleep issues, and a hyper/agitated feeling - it doesn't seem to be specific to Rifampin, but to most of the meds that target bart.
Weight loss hasn't been an issue for me though - 10 pounds is significant, so you might ask your LLMD about that.
Levaquin is another option for bart, but can cause tendon issues, so you must be careful with that one.
