my family is urging me to get tested for other diseases before i accept i have lyme and attribute it to all my symptoms (got dx'd with lyme 4 yrs ago by dr h in NY and hav all the symptoms and know i have it and was confirmed by all lyme drs i saw except one)

Anyway...i have not been tested for celiac and I wanted to see if anyone here knows if you can have celiac AND lyme...alot of people i know feel celiac IS lyme disguised...

any opinions would help..i know celiac can cause really weird symptoms too.

Thanks. My family really wants me to start from scratch to "find out what is wrong with me".

Lyme can cause celiac/gluten intolerance, yes.

A lot of things can cause gluten intolerance though like autoimmune disorders and other infections/chronic viruses, etc.

Lymebrained, if you have a positive lyme test and was diagnosed with it, you have lyme. Don't let your family try to dissuade you from believing that and attributing it to something else. You will not get better that way. I mean, it does help in the long run to look for other problems (other infections, viruses, mold, yeast, etc., etc.) ON TOP of the lyme, but don't discount what lyme can do. It's a devastating disease...

LymeMD wrote on his blog that several lyme patients have weak antibodies for celiac and negative biopsies, and must avoid all gluten. But that is a temporary thing, and they can go on and eat gluten again after successfull treatment for lyme. There should still be some sercheable posts about this pseudo-celiac over at celiac.com.

The other thing is, that most lyme patients would probably benefit from a gluten free diet. (and low-carb, and one has to go off grains to be low-carb anyway)

The trouble is, antibiotic treatment can also cause gluten intolerance, because the meds can cause yeast and "leaky gut" which then causes allergic reactions or intolerance of certain foods, especially gluten and dairy.

Celiac is an autoimmune disease, and is a different thing than gluten intolerance, which you probably know.

If you do go off gluten for a bit, then any tests for celiac, including blood tests and biopsies, will not be reliable.

I do understand your family's attitude. Taking antibiotics for a long period of time is a serious decision. The controversies over diagnosis sure don't help.

Did you have positive testing? (Yes, you can have Lyme despite negative tests, but positive tests would help with the family situation here!)

Very important!! Why not try the diet for about a month and see how you feel? You have to go completely off ALL gluten... read labels religiously.

Go to www.celiac.com as someone suggested. They have a list of foods and ingredients to avoid.

Don't listen to your family!!! Stick to your guns!

It is very wise to rule out any and everything that the doctors can think of. So, yes, get tested for celiac disease and anything else the doctors can think of. Your family is very wise in that respect. Listen to them.

If no cause can be found for your illness, then consider infectious pathogens. Including, but not limited to Lyme and co-infections, HHV-6, EBV, enterovirus and Chlamydia pneumonia.

Best, Timaca
