Can someone help me with a question or two?

1) My cortisol levels were out of whack and my neurological test (done before diagnosing lyme) came back today (3 months later).

I have very low epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, DOPAC, seratonin, 5-HIAA, Glycine, Taurine, GABA, Glutamate.

My histamine was elevated.

Keep in mind this is before I started treatment 3 months ago.

But the one common trend for me is I still have whacky sleep patterns. My local MD (who is a naturalist and really good at what he does)...

has recommended to me a couple products to support adrenal function and get my cortisol levels back to normal.

1- phosphatidylserine (300mg/day)
-improves HPA axis

2- 5HTP
-seratonin levels

3- Morning cortisol levels were low....
- Vit C, bioflavanoids, magnesium, pantothemic acid

4- Adrenvive (herb)

What do you guys think? Obviously I'm gonna run it by my LLMD... but I really want my adrenal functions back to normal and cortisol levels back to normal.

This local doctor told me that the cortisol levels hold the key to almost all hormone, neurotransmitter, adrenal functions.

I don't know. By out of whack, do you mean low (adrenal fatigue)?

Phosphatidylserine could conceivably lower cortisol. I'm not sure what kind of action it would have in the presence of adrenal fatigue.

Vit. C and B complex can't hurt. Maybe Ashwagandha and Rhodiola.... Mag and Pant acid also good...not sure about the others...

There's always Isocort and then low dose cortisol too...

I have very high cortisol levels in the am (7am) was my first spit sample. So maybe that means they are also too high in the wee hrs and causing me not to sleep.

I have been going nuts this week trying to find a doc that would do a whole hormonal workup. No matter how many sleep meds they put me on, makes no difference.

Anyone have any ideas for high cortisol and what tests I should ask for?

Canefan, you are very lucky to have the MD you have! At least you are getting some testing.

I take a similar regime, prescribed by my LLMD

I have only one adrenal gland and my cortisol testing was at the low end

He has his own adrenal support formula, I can't use any licorice due to Hx of secondary hypertension from hyperaldosteronism

If the C, B vits, B5 hadn't helped he would have put me on low dose hydrocortisone (cortef) but I improved with the natural supplements.

answered in the pm but will do it here too

I had Conn's Syndrome, secondary hypertension caused by an adrenal adenoma excreting excess aldosterone.

Some say licorice can increase aldosterone thus increasing salt retention and elevating BP

My bp is much improved since having an adrenal gland removed but it is not wise for me to take anything that might raise my bp, I remain salt sensitive as it is.

for those without adrenal issues there are conflicting reports on licorice's effect on blood pressure.

Just came from my llmd, who said my adrenals are slow too. suggested 600mg of NAC 2 times daily and licorice.

licorice helps but may drop testosterone levels...

Canesfan-

Was your local Dr. able to perform all those hormonal tests through bloodwork or did he require urine and saliva as well?

Reason being, I am trying to get the same kind of work up (neuro-transmitter, hormonal, etc) and it looks like they all require urine/saliva.

If it's possible to accurately test these levels through blood, it would makes things a bit easier.

Please let me know if you get a chance.

Thanks

Derek

wow- just looked at this thread while researching phosphatidylserine: Canefan, you've come a long way in a short time with that treatment, judging by your posts about adrenals and sleep and such.

Ya, I can't tell you how much supporting the adrenals has helped.

It's the reason that Buhner's core protocol involves Eleutherococcus (Siberian Ginseng)
Great for the adrenals and dealing with stress

Cowden uses an adrenal tincture in his core protocol.

But the key to fixing my sleep problem wasn't a magic pill taken before bed (melatonin, valerian root, etc etc)....

It was getting my circadian rhythm on track and allowing my body and cortisol levels to function properly.

If your cortisol is high at night... all the ambien in the world won't help you sleep (not to mention thats an unhealthy way to fix sleep issues)

Find out how to support your adrenals and a lot of symptoms will disappear.

And be patient
