If you haven't looked at this, time to check it out and familiarize yourself with Biofilms.

Very good presentation.

How is this different than acetyl-l-carnitine?

I was horrified to learn that Dr M now has Alzheimer's and he does not remember any of his work. He cannot work any more. How sickly ironic is that?

It's a great loss to our community.

He worked on lyme biofilms, which he also correlated with Alzheimers disease. This seems suspicious to me. Could it be only a coincidence or did he somehow contract lyme?

BTW, that pdf for his work will not download. Says file corrupted or not a pdf. Anyone else get it to work?

Thanks. It made me get up to go take my supplements which I have been ignoring. I take N acetyl cysteine and lactoferrin and nattokinase for biofilm but I do not know the correct amount to use.
gwb L Carnitine is I believe another amino acid. It is good for converting fat to muscle and helps to metabolize glucose. I give it to some of my horses and the recommended amount of that amino acid for them is one gram per 100 lbs body weight. I think I will just take the same amount of N acetyl cysteine unless anyone here knows what it should be.

That is terrible news. Its going to be someone like MacDonald who is going to find a cure for us.

My theory, fwiw, is that BB needs some time in our bodies to establish biofilms & protect itself from abx. . LD can be knocked out by doxy & other drugs if treatment starts before the biofilms get established.

But once established, abx become a holding action----hopefully stop LD from getting any worse, but can't eradicate it.

Imo, thats (biofilms) the mechanism for the persistance of LD.

Lou, if you have Vista with a 64-bit Internet Explorer, you can't use Adobe. You should have 32-bit browser capability also, and that is ok with Adobe.

Mine are just labeled "Internet Explorer" and "64-bit Internet Explorer".

Hope that helps.

Hey Lou, I find the link to be good. Is it possibly a pop-up problem setting. Or did you get it to work?

Is there anyone else having problems at getting this pdf file?

bv,
You can buy it at any vitamin store. I take 1200mg in the morning and 1200 at dinner. It breaks the mucus bonds. If you do a google search on n acyetl cysteine and biofilms several article come up. It is also antibacterial.

In the above study:

"NAC can be administered by nebulization or direct instillation, orally or intravenously. The concentrations tested in our study are rather higher than those reached in
serum when applied by the intravenous or oral route.11
Nevertheless, it may be possible by local application to obtain useful concentrations to avoid the formation of
biofilms and consequently the adherence of CoNS.

In conclusion, our results suggest that NAC may prevent
the formation of biofilms and adherence of S. epider -
midis to prosthetic and intravascular devices. It would,
therefore, be appropriate to carry out clinical studies to
confirm this."

I want NAC to work as I take it as well. How do we go from the above study, in vitro and on prosthetic devices and catheters to in vivo bacteria that are "in hiding".

The article aknowledges that extremely high doses would be needed if used orally. They are talking about using the NAC topically on the devices to break up the biofilm at the site.

I know it can't hurt to use NAC, but I wonder how to know we are taking enough. (I am playing a bit of devil's advocate here. One needs to be cautious of using in vitro studies like this and trying to apply it to our condition.)

The dose they uses in some studies are very high. I wonder if its beneficial to take several grams of NAC a day. I also read that you should use VitC with NAC (in proportion 3:1 or so). And there are some study on mice with NAC induce hypoxia (they used mega doses and it was mice though)

Well, it worked this time, for some reason. What appears to be spaces in the url are actually underscores.

Yes, it might be a leap to go from NAC mega doses in vitro and on medical devices to inside various places in the human body. There are people looking hard for ways to counter biofilm since that is thought to be the cause of chronic disease resistance to abx, not just lyme fortunately.

There are any number of areas where the research on other diseases might help us eventually. A good thing too, since NIH is not leading the lyme charge, and other big grantors arent either.

Be careful with NAC. GiGi put out some strong reasons to avoid it like the plague.

What reasons? mercury redistribution? - many things redistribute mercury. Its better to get mercury out of your body (with DMSA, and then DMSA+ALA protocol) then avoiding useful supplements
