Hey Everyone,
My husband has Lyme. Does anyone know if the disease can travel through sperm (to myself or to a fetus)? We do have one son. My husband became ill 6 weeks after he was born. I am not pregnant now, but just thinking of the future if we have another baby.

Thanks so much.

Part of the job is to spread itself around.

In my training I have been taught that it can be passed through seminal fluid which is what sperm are in.

Not sure its been scientifically proven; but seems like a possibily.

Yes. Even Wikipedia of all sources acknowledges this (though it then links to an article by Steere saying transmission is not likely to occur). I believe everything opposite of what Steere says.

It can also be found in the urine and breast milk via PCR.

Some LLMD's say that its not likely, while others say it is. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I have been ill for 3 and 1/2 years and my hubby does not have it.

Like HIV, maybe it is easier transmitted from a man to a woman.

Also must consider that when couples have it, could be they were just in the same areas together and both were infected via a tick.

There are many couples where only one partner has it, so doesn't sound like it is that easily transmitted via sexually to me.

I am still out on what my opinion is on this.

I totally believe it's sexually transmitted.

Bigstan, thanks for the link. That could explain why I'm not well. I think it may be a piece of the puzzle anyway.

My husband has lyme also but he refuses treatment. I've been in treatment for 5 years but I'm far from well. I'm much better though.

Could be he's passing it back to me. I think condoms are in order. I had never read this before or given it much thought even though I feel it's sexually transmitted.

Guess I should have given it more thought and connected the dots. [bonk]
