This question was asked to me by a very rude, insolent and ignorant DUCK...so I'm in the process of trying to answer that question and need some medical references re: vagus nerve and Lyme.

I know it can be infected by Lyme. Mine is, which is why I have irregular heartbeats and blood pressure spells. I had bells palsy of the gut and they found delayed gastric emptying. I think the vagus nerve becomes inflamed and this effects every system.

How much can you prove to a doc who is ignorant about Lyme anyway and why bother?

Seek - why bother? Because it's important for these kinds of docs to know a) more about TBD's and their tx, and b) when a complaint is filed it will help in the future if the same doc receives other complaints.

What I want to know is, how does someone KNOW that their vagus nerve is what is causing their heart palps/fast pulse rate? Is there a way to KNOW for sure that an infected vagus nerve is the cause of the heart stuff or is that just after having tons of heart tests and everything is normal in that department, so you just point to the vagus nerve as the cause?

I'm sorry I can't give you articles, etc., but I found out from Geneal here on LN that my inability to voice was probably the vagus nerve not innervating my vocal cords correctly.
When I would tell docs, as if I knew this to be true, that I had apraxia caused by vagus nerve damage affecting my vocal cords, they all seemed to think it made sense.
So, there has to be stuff in the literature....
Probably a stupid question, but have you googled "vagus nerve" and "Lyme" or "borellia" or whatever?
I hate when docs are ignorant AND jerks!
Good luck! -Sharon

Lyme affects the cranial nerves which is responsible for many of our symptoms.
The 10th cranial nerve, or Vagus nerve, controls heartbeat, breathing, digestion, spleen, liver, and many things in the thorax.
It runs up through the back of the throat, too. This is how one can have so many symptoms if it affects just that one nerve.
Many people with Lyme suffer from shortness of breath, also known as air hunger.

Gosh everyone, thank you so much for your insight, links and advice. It WAS a demeaning experience for me seeing his 'specialist' (not LLMD) - his ignorance was so pervasive and he became belligerent and argumentative with me.
I'll sock it to him...with information. Thank you all again, I'm too sick to deal with this nonsense.

I would think if he was intelligient enough to get a duck degree, he could research and find out for himself. And thats what I would tell him.
My GP told me we don't really have LD in Mississippi, so I intend on asking him, how he was able to get a medical degree, yet can't for the life of him figure out anything about migration.
It blows my mind that you can graduate with a medical degree, but how a tick migrates from one state to another throws you for a loop. Thats scary!
I guess medical school must be easier than I thought!

Yeah sutherngrl, sorry you're in this club too - haha, good question to ask the yo-yo.
When he suggested the diff breathing/swallowing and other issues were AIMH (all in my head) I was tempted to say his medical degree was (AIHA)..and you can fill in the last letter anyway you want!! haha feels so good to vent.

I agree Btmb03 about blasting these docs who choose to be ignorant, pompous, and rude to patients at our expense. I've had plenty my share of this demeaning treatment and it sticks in my head.
I just don't belive 99% of them can be changed. They live in a fairy-tale world at times and it's SO much easier to say BS like it's in the patient's head.
Sadly, I feel the whole medical profession, outside of a few bright light bulbs, is a disaster. Money and greed has made the world go around. It's disgusting.
They are not dumb, they have access to more medical research probably than any on this board. To believe they can't find this stuff on their own is ludicrous.

Lyme inflames the vagus nerve that leads from the brain to the heart. It causes dysfunction to many part of the body this way.

I have vagus nerve damage. Affects my vocal cords (partial paresis) and my heartrate (SVT). I also have trouble with breathing on and off but this was attributed to the Babs not Lyme (yet my most recent tests showed I was -ve for Babs. That said, the breathlessness persists. An ENT was the one who told me I had 10th cranial nerve damage but could not tell me why. I am hoping it was caused by Lyme - another piece of the puzzle that fits.

It's a term some of Lymenet's finest made to describe a mainstream doc who does not believe in chronic Lyme and ridicules it.

Thank you all for your responses. WC - what then is the tx for this problem since it seems to be getting significantly worse the more I treat.
kmj - glad you're getting *some* answers. Sorry for using that term, it is a pejorative term as Seek so so eloquently for "docs" who completely dismiss this very serious illness.
