I knew it would be baking soda before I opened the url. I'm a baking soda believer. I use it around my household for cleaning, washing, bathing etc.

My family laughs at me and baking soda stories. Wait till they see this.

Thanks emla for posting.

My mother believed anything could be cured, or cleaned, with either baking soda or apple cider vinegar. [Cool] [Cool] [Cool]

Basically they are admitting that you will still have the flu for at least 3 days?

Flus probably last on average 3 days or maybe 4... This article is ridiculous.

The swine flu was a horrible horrible experience for me, I seriously doubt some magical powder made of a 5 atom-molecule could have made it any better. Especially once you think about the science behind the baking soda.

The instant this basic molecule touches your stomach, it will instantaneously break apart and be neutralized by the intensely acidic hydrochloric acid (HCl) in your stomach.

NaHCO3(Baking Soda) + HCL(Stomach Acid) = NaCL(Salt) + H2O(Water) + CO2(Gas)

This is the exact reaction that will happen to every single molecule of baking soda you ingest. If anything it will make you burp from extra CO2, otherwise, you might as well be drinking salt water (NaCL + H2O)

As it turns out, The reaction is exothermic, so the only thing it can do to a fever is make your body temperature even higher.

The reason this was removed from the box is that it was a completely false claim, false advertising, and flat out bogus. I really can't wait to get the annoying chain letters in my email about this one.

If you think a simple base can cure the flu, take some TUMS, which are more powerful than baking soda, and will at least do something instead of giving you gas and turning into salt water in your stomach.

Many people do NOT produce strong stomach acid.

That is one of the main contributors to digestive problems.

And increasing body temp may be a good idea. The body reacts that way to help kill the some pathogens.

I have sat in the tub many times with baking soda for infections, aches + pains with good results.
And in many natural hot springs (alkaline !) with good to excellent results.

Basic chem is what happens in a test tube, not what happens with the physiology of the body.

You don't have to try it if you don't want to.

I'm sorry you had such an experience with H1N1. Really. I know it can get nasty.

I know you "doubt" this remedy would've helped, but people often doubt things that we later find to have validity.

The science behind it -that the molecules will break down into their basic particles and form different compounds- makes me wonder how those components act on the body. Like the sodium, for instance. I don't think its importance should be dismissed so easily.

To quote massman:

Basic chem is what happens in a test tube, not what happens with the physiology of the body.

To expand on that comment, I'd like to point out that it is more complicated than simple chemistry.

That's why pharmacists aren't doctors [Wink] .

(TUMS can't work the same way that baking soda works, it's not the same thing.)
baking soda = sodium bicarbonate; tums = calcium carbonate (plus some other ingredients)
