This is certainly interesting, Emla!
I read the other day that at least some homeopaths won't treat a 'common cold' because they believe it is the body's way of getting rid of toxins.
This 'toxin' theory seems to support Cheney's ideas.

Emla, I just used sodium bicarbonate today for a cold. I guess it does help! I just ingested a bit then put some drops in my nostrils. I do feel some help from it.
I believe though that sodium bicarbonate has killing properties as seen in fungi / candida.
---- Tracy, interesting idea. Since I moved to my new town, that's got air polution somewhat high, i catch frequent colds (and every one else around).
I feel though that the use of sodium bicarbonate cannot do bad as it may help with some cleansing.
It does seem to help with stuffed nose!
What are your thoughts on that, Tracy?

How is your cold today, Selma? Are you still experimenting with the sodium bicarbonate?
Do you have any pH testing tape so you could test your urine?
I've had several bouts of sneezing the past 2 days or so, which is usually the way a cold will start for me. But as yet, no cold has happened, just the sneezing. My diet has been terrible for about the past week from eating a lot of acid-producing, carbohydrate-laden, `holiday' foods! It may be interesting to note that I've been using alkalinizing drops in my water for several months, and I've been drinking about 8 ounces of hot water heavily salted with Himalayan Salt (1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon every day)...... perhaps this is why I have not caught a cold!
I just tested my urine and it is 6.8. That's pretty good considering I've not ingested anything but some water and some coffee (acid-producing).
Sodium bicarbonate IVs are used to treat acid conditions of the body, and certain types of toxicity and poisonings including internal contamination from radiation, or poisonings from certain medications. Dr. Simoncini in Italy has pioneered cancer treatment using sodium bicarbonate (which he believes kills the fungus that is responsible for cancer.)
I don't know if I would ingest sodium bicarbonate on a continuous basis, but I doubt there are any negative consequences from short-term use. (It seems like I've read that prolonged use of sodium bicarb can cause a certain type of kidney stone in certain people, but I don't recall where I read that.)
Sodium bicarb may be the best, first-response therapy yet for colds and flus! And perhaps colds and flus can be prevented if we ingest some baking soda when we know that our diet has been poor or when we've lost a lot of sleep - any stress that can cause our systems to become acidic!
By the way, I'm in the market for some cheaper alkalinizing drops to add to water/beverages. I am using a product called pH Enhancer made by Standard Enzyme Company of North America. A 2 oz. bottle costs $34 + shipping. At one point, my Electro Dermal Testing practitioner had me using up a bottle of it every 2 weeks, but that's dropped back to about a bottle per month.
I would welcome any other product suggestions.

Brussels, thank you for the feed back. I had been wondering if the sodium bicarbonate would help or not. So, it's good to know that it did bring you some relief. I haven't tried the sodium bicarbonate treatment yet because I haven't really had a bad cold this fall/winter.....knock on wood. Although, prior to this year I would usually get at least 2 or 3 really bad colds per year.
The main thing that I have been doing differently this year is that when ever I feel like I might be coming down with a cold I immediately take George Eby's "Cold Cure" zinc acetate lozenges. And so far I haven't gotten a bad cold yet this season.
I guess it could just be a coincidence though because I have taken other zinc products in the past but they didn't help me all that much. But personally, I tend to think the "Cold Cure" zinc acetate lozenges have helped me to prevent the bad symptoms of a cold from occurring. Actually, it's been quite miraculous....although to be fair this cold/flu season isn't over yet. So, we'll see how it goes......I might have to try the bicarbonate treatment yet.
If anyone's interested in the zinc acetate lozenges then here's some more info about them:
****Note: Zinc acetate lozenges seem to be superior as a treatment for the common cold when compared to other forms of zinc.
A quote from the second link above:
"Only absorbed Zn2+ ions available at pH 7.4 migrating from oral tissues into nasal and nasopharyngeal tissues are useful in shortening common colds. High Zn2+ ion concentrations in common cold lozenges at pH lower than 7.4 are irrelevant, misleading to the consumer, and useless in practice."
