My doctor told me that there is no IV treatment for babesia. Is that true?

Hmmmmm. I have wondered about this too as I thought I would die from a Bactrim herx last summer.
Two days ago I started Trimperarim, but wonder what is next if I can't stay on it.

Clindamycin has an effect on babesia, and that is sometimes given in IV.
Also, Zithromax has action against babesia and that can be given through IV too.
But the really common heavy hitters for babesia, like Mepron and Malarone, are not available in IV that I know of. Oral only.

I'm on IV Zith and I also take oral mepron. Zith on its own will kill babesia, but works a LOT better with mepron and visa versa.
I'm only 4 days into IV zith (I'm also on IV Rocephin) so I can't yet report how it works. I will say that ALL of my babs sx have increased a LOT!
Hopefully it is a herx and killing LOTS of babs!

Zith is commonly used with Mepron to treat Babs. Bactrim is also used for Babs.

Zithromax on it's own has been shown in scientific articles to kill babesia. I think it was "in vivo," so I do believe there were people who responded to just Zithromax.
These studies that I saw must have been before Mepron was around, because they were testing Zith alone, Quinine alone, and Zith with Quinine.
So Zith did work, but Zith with Quinine was superior (so I'm thinking that meant it worked in more cases...can't recall without searching for the abstract).
But for people who have chronic Lyme, babesia, etc etc....maybe just Zithromax is not enough and you need combo therapy. I'm guessing the cases where Zith works alone were probably not very complicated.
So basically, knshore's second sentence sums it up.
