Thanks to the knowledgeable people on thid board, I found out that Mucinex can relieve head congestion, pressure and fog.

I took one Mucinex last night and within an hour I got relief! I am so delighted!

This product has Guafenisin in it. Does anyone have any idea what this is and why it helped my symptoms?

Can Guafenisin be derived from a natural source?

Thank you!

JJ

It really is great stuff; we've been using it in our house for years. Works well for the kids too.

It helps the 'crud' drain so as to lessen the chance of a secondary infection.

Don't know if it can be derived from a natural source.

Mucinex contains guaifenesin, which thins mucus so it will drain better, which in turn reduces the sinus pressure.

Guaifenesin has other, less visible, effects for me, and some others. For me it relieved a chronic, severe muscle spasm and tightness condition. Some believe it does so by breaking down mucus which has been blocking cells all over the body from releasing their waste products. As the cells then release waste, normal function returns.

I took it daily for a couple of years, and periodically I saw dark, bad-smelling, mucusy stuff in my urine. Apparently that was the cellular wastes.

When I no longer saw that stuff, I reduced to a small daily dose, and my severe muscle tightness has not recurred.

I'm not aware of a natural source.

Many with "Fibromyalgia" take heavy doses of Guaifenesin for various complaints. I won't try naming them.

I have to take Mucinex for my sinus issues when they come up, as I cannot take decongestants since I have a heart condition. It's pretty good stuff!

I found Mucinex to be a miracle-worker. It has completely eliminated my head pressure and swelling.

You can buy guaifenesin at a health food store, but it's no different than Mucinex, and at a lower dosage.

Can you take it while you are taking antibiotics? Will it reduce the effectivness of antibiotics?

You can take it with antibiotics and has no effect on abx. It thins mucus and drains fluid. I had no idea my head pressure was caused by fluid/mucus, until I tried Mucinex. It worked with the first dose.

Where do you buy Mucinex? I like the name brand and Sam's Club sells 65 tablets for $25.

I use Municex and it helps me. My 2 sons that have constant, severe headaches and head pressure get no relief from Mucinex.

Sometimes the difference between Mucinex and other brands of guaifenisin is that Mucinex is "time release" and the cheaper ones are not. So you can decide if the time release version is worth it to you.

Personally I find Mucinex helps my sinus condition a lot. I can no longer take a decongestant, it makes me very jumpy and hyper. The other treatment I use is saline rinsing (with a pulse machine, HydroPulse like a WaterPik)--this really benefits me a lot.

Thank you for this thread....I'm interested! My hesitancy to take something with guaifenesin is that i thought a person had to stay away from certain foods while taking it. Something like foods with salicylates?? I couldn't imagine restricting my diet any further, so i passed on this when I heard of it years ago.

For those of you having a clear(er) head, are you taking it without salicylate restrictions? Also, is it hard on the tummy at all?

With gratitude,
riverspirit

Guiafanesen had been prescribed for our family for 20 years for sinus and congestion.

We always have Mucinex on hand. My daughter started taking it because when she has a big die off, her neck lymph glands swell. Mucinex helps to keep them drained.

I believe a pharmacy listed in Dr. St. Amand's book sells the pure guaifenesin..sorry don't have the phone # as I've lent someone the book. They're great and will send you a free sample if you're a new customer.

riverspirit--I think the salicylate restriction is one theory that applies to fibromyalgia treatment, not sure to what extent it might be valid, or apply to other conditions. I don't have fibro. I've never paid any attention to salicylates.

I do take Mucinex as needed for sinus congestion and it helps me a lot. I don't get any tummy problems from it or other side effects that are noticeable. If you DID determine it was irritating a stomach condition you could try taking the non-time release version instead of the Mucinex. Sometimes time-release things irritate my stomach; for example I can take vitamin C with no problem but 'time-release' vitamin C makes me feel like I have an ulcer, ouch.

I don't think it bothers the stomach at all and mine is pretty sensitive.

I buy the Walgreen's brand. Cheap and effective.
