Many thanks to Scott (SForsgren screen name), also known as the 'betterhealthguy' for the notes he took at Dr. K.'s 2009 Conference. Found a very interesting tidbit in them that some might want to investigate...

Was reading the notes to my friend last night and she stopped me after reading this part...

"Lyme biotoxins are excreted by the liver. Taurine is a major factor in the excretion of biotoxins and is also found to be low in people with HPU. If there is not enough taurine available, one will be unable to remove biotoxins. It is a huge part of the equation."

Below is a paraphrase of the conversation with my friend that's pertinent to this point.

Friend: "So that's why SHE had us taking Taurine! Wish she'd have told me exactly why."

Me: "She who?"

Friend: "Dr. (LFMD) in E. TX that I started seeing in 2005. The first 2 supps she wanted me to take were Taurine and another one, I think it was Inositol; not sure I remember the 2nd one right. I asked her why and she said it would make me feel better, faster and help my liver process everything. I'm not sure of the effect; I stopped taking it after a couple of months. Some of the long-time Lyme pts did tell me that it helped them a bit though."

Me: "Do you remember the dosages?"

Friend: "Not really, but she said just buy whatever Taurine is at the HF store and take either 2, bid, or maybe 2, tid... Can't remember exactly."

Me: "I really wish you'd start writing these things down...."

The conversation sort of veered off from that point; nevermind the rest.

That was all my friend could remember right off the cuff, but I thought it noteworthy for those who like to investigate various avenues. I'd love it if you'd post your info. re: Taurine and possibly, Inositol on this thread so we can keep it all in one place. I've got to begin training a new person in our ofc today and my personal investigation time is limited. Just thought I'd put this out there for those of you who might be interested, because I'm also interested.

Scott, thanks again for taking notes and sharing them on your website. Thanks also to both docs; both whose last names begin with K.

Thanks so much for this reminder. Taurine is so calming, too.

Thanks, ping!

I didn't know that it helped arrythmias as well. Thanks L2! I'm getting some this weekend and hoping to help clean up some of this toxic exposure from my appendix rupture. I didn't want to go too far out on a limb, like another rx med, or get overly complicated. Life is complicated enough!

Has anyone found out anything re: Inositol?

Have a great weekend!

Taurine also helps the brain, protecting against seizures - especially if taken with magnesium and B-6.

Magnesium acetyltaurinate (ATaMg), is part of a study formula that helps minimize audiogenic seizures (seizures triggered from sound). I deal with that plus a couple kinds of porphyria. Funny how this all seems to intersect with toxin overload and the liver's capacity.

I have tried for years (on and off) to find magnesium acetyltaurinate (ATaMg), but it eludes me. Had I not been forced to drop college French (I just couldn't think), I would try to contact the authors.

Still, taurine, magnesium and B-6, are also all very good together. But it's not quite the same:

Excerpt from below: " . . . However this combination of vitamin B-6 and magnesium salts did not prevent the recurrence of audiogenic seizures, which was only achieved by ATaMg. . . ."

AUDIOGENIC SEIZURES IN MAGNESIUM-DEFICIENT

Audiogenic seizures in magnesium-deficient mice: effects of magnesium pyrrolidone-2-carboxylate, magnesium acetyltaurinate, magnesium chloride and vitamin B-6.

Magnesium deficiency in mice causes and increases audiogenic seizures. This effect was reversed by oral administration of magnesium acetyltaurinate (ATaMg), magnesium pyrrolidone-2-carboxylate (PCMH), MgCl2.

When treatment was discontinued, audiogenic seizures recurred only in the groups treated with PCMH or MgCl2. Following intraperitoneal administration of AtaMg, the mice were protected against audiogenic seizures after 4 h and this protection persisted for up to 72 h after the treatment. With the other magnesium salts (PCMH and MgCl2) maximum protection occurred by 6 h after the injection, but after that time the number of seizures increased sharply. Intraperitoneal taurine alone only reduced the severity of the audiogenic seizures.

The length of treatment needed to inhibit audiogenic seizures was reduced by treatment with a combination of vitamin B-6 (a magnesium fixing agent) and PCMH or MgCl2. However this combination of vitamin B-6 and magnesium salts did not prevent the recurrence of audiogenic seizures, which was only achieved by ATaMg.

The results suggest that audiogenic seizures in magnesium-deficient mice form a model of magnesium depletion. This depletion is completely inhibited by the combination of an inhibitory neurotransmitter (taurine) and magnesium, in the form of magnesium acetyltaurinate.

Keebler - Thank you so much for all the excellent info! There's a poster that I was communicating with via private email that it think is prone to the type of seizures you described. They must be very rough. I had seizures in 2003 during my tx with Flagyl from all the toxic build-up because of the sudden, massive die off. Thankfully, those are over! You have my deepest, heart-felt "ouch"!

Have a great weekend everybody!

Thanks for this post. Taurine is a great idea.
I just tested it with my biotensor and it tested very good.
Hopefully it helps with detox.

My LLMD has just started me on taurine, mag/calcium combo, fishoil, seaweed extract, vessel health guard and DHEA.

SOOO many new meds ): but glad to hear good things about taurine.

I wanted to bump this thread up... since Better Health Guy has some great information on Taurine!

Low Taurine is one of the lab indicators of HPU... so my son's LLMD did an amino acid profile on my son. He is low in Taurine. I was doing some research and I found this great article.
