HHV-6 is a virus, a kind of herpes. Many with lyme and "CFS" are found to also have this. It may be that it's dormant but when lyme adds to the stress in our bodies, dormant infections also can wake up, so to speak. It's good that your doctor is a step ahead with this as it's extremely helpful to know if this is a player.

There are many of these kinds of "stealth" infections that are important to consider. Stealth means, hidden, hard to detect and very devious in how they work.

For further education on HHV-6, this may be the place to begin:

. . . pathogens tested at Focus Diagnostics lab. HHV-6, EBV, Cpn, Parvo, HSV1. Here's a list of tests and code numbers that I just had run there:

2420 EBV Panel
40530 HHV-6 Antibody IgG
40525 HSV 1/2 IgG Elisa
23120 Chlamydophila pneumoniae Antibodies
41025 VZV total and IgM antibody panel
41381 Parvovirus B19 IgG
24600 CMV IgG antibody

I run Coxsackie and Enterovirus at ARUP lab. Here's info on how to do that:
http://www.enterovirusfoundation.org/chronicinfections.shtml
Scroll to the bottom of the page for the info.

Getting tested at Focus can be tricky. How to do it is explained here:

http://hhv6foundation.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=testing&action=display&thread=26

Focus is owned by Quest, so if you are lucky and have a Quest lab near you, you can ask that lab director if they will take care of Focus' billing.

I see two ID doctors. They are wonderful. If you can find one to help you with the testing and treatment that would be awesome.

Chlamydia Pneumonia will make you feel worse on antibiotics if you have it.

While I am not yet well, I am feeling the best I have in 6 years...and this is after treating HHV-6, EBV, VZV, HSV1 and enterovirus. We are still working on enterovirus, HSV1 and Cpn.

Good luck,
Timaca

Adding to that:

As mentioned in Timaca's post above, Cpn is also a common stealth infection that those with lyme, CFS, MS can have. For more about that:

Mycoplasma Pneumonia, too, is another chronic stealth infection to consider. It's often just referred to as mycoplasma but there are different strains.

Yes, I saw all of that before. I still don't get it.

I know I'm a little slow these days on my comprehension. I read all of those things, but still don't understand what it is, how you get it, etc.

Is it related to Lyme or something that could be wrong other than Lyme, but it appears to have a lot of the same symptoms as Lyme?

It is not related to the lyme bacteria. It is a virus. It could be passed by a tick, although not necessarily.

Yes, it has a lot of the same symptoms as lyme. But treatment is totally different.

It's best explained here:

I wouldn't be too concerned about viruses. Everyone has them and there is not much that can be done to treat them. For example anyone that has had a cold sore has the herpes virus, which is pretty much everyone.

HHV-6, EBV, etc., are very common and most of us have had it at some point. Do not panic, these viruses become activated when your immune system is low because of Lyme disease. Your body is busy fighting infections so the viruses come out to play. They will go back to dormant once you knock out the bacterial infections. Some patients need Valtrex.

I was positive for HHV6a too. I don't think it's my main problem though.

Please do not underestimate HHV-6. Read up on it. If present, treating it can make lyme treatment work better. In some cases, the lyme may not be causing all the symptoms but HHV-6 could be.

While HHV-6 common, when it is active, it needs to be addressed just as while CMV is common, it can become dangerous for patients with compromised immune systems.

In addition to anti-viral meds, Allicin or andrographis might also be explored.

Viruses will not necessarily go dormant. I know people who had only HHV-6 infection who were very ill (bed ridden). They had to undergo treatment to get well.

As I've said many times, test for lots of pathogens and treat what looks most obviously wrong.

I had HHV-6 infection (among others). Valcyte helped me a lot. I have Coxsackie B3, B4 and B5...treatment for that has helped a lot. If you don't test for and treat these pathogens you can remain sick, thinking it's lyme or a tick borne co-infection.

Best, Timaca

I'm sure if I was tested I'd be positive for a whole soup of things. So far everything I've been tested for I was positive to. So far EBV, HHV6a, Lyme, and Bartonella. But I don't think that anyone has figured out what the main underlying problem is. Figure that out and treat it, and I think I'll get better.

aiden424~
You have to look closely at the antibody titers. Just because a test reading comes back "high" or outside the reference range doesn't mean that active, chronic infection is present.

Here's info on HHV-6: http://hhv-6foundation.webs.com/faq.htm

Here's some info on EBV:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext/111088889/PDFSTART

If your titers are really high for a certain pathogen, I'd treat that first, then go from there.

For info on enterovirus and testing see:
http://www.enterovirusfoundation.org/
http://www.enterovirusfoundation.org/chronicinfections.shtml

I've seen improvements in my health because I've treated HHV-6, EBV, VZV, HSV1 and enteroviruses along with treating bacterial pathogens. Until they know how to fix the immune system, our only option is to go after the pathogens. All of them.

Best, Timaca

My LLMD is of the opinion that Keebler expressed - HHV6 is an important factor that needs to be addressed. It can cause many symptoms similar to lyme - burning skin, fatigue, brain fog, comprised immunity, etc. She feels that if we get the viral load down, it will help us get over the Lyme faster.

I was tested and my titers were somewhat high. Since I don't do well with antivirals, she put me on homeopathic medicine, ProBoost, and lauricidin. Treating my adrenals with Isocort also helped. I moved off a plateau that I had been on a year. I work full time, and I function close to 90% on most days.
