I've taken just about every brand probiotic and have had little improvement from them including

the sachets of VSL#3.

But... I tried a new one last week Healthy Origins 30 billion with I think 7 different strains in it.

Boy oh boy I got incontinent foul mucus for 3 days on it then white covered stools for another week.

I tried it again the other day and same thing happened and am sure this is what is causing it.

Why is this?

While I'm actually happy I had a probiotic do something for once. It wasn't what I wanted. [Frown]

When you flourish your gut with good bacteria ideally it will kill of bad bacteria in the gut. That's its job to begin with.

So it might not be a bad thing. I don't know.

That seems strange to me. I wonder if that batch could have been contaminated with some kind of virus or bad bacteria from the factory?

I had norovirus (aka stomach flu) recently, and I had diarrhea for a day or so, but then I got the white-covered stools for a day that you described.

So keeping in mind that was from having a nasty GI infection, this is making me think something's not right. So I'm thinking it's a possibility there's something in those pills that isn't agreeing with you, or maybe you picked up a milder stomach bug separate from the probiotics. I dunno.

I would stop taking that probiotic though.

Hoosier,

Funny you mention that.

Even pro-biotics have a good chance of having bad bacteria in them.

There are billions and billions of bacterias in the gut and they say about 11% are bad bacterias that our gut has tagged as "good."

so when we take pro-biotics there's a good chance we get some bad bacteria in them as well.

I don't think that is the case here... but I'm just thinking outloud.

White covered mucus stools is just about gone now.

My thoughts...

It was a bad batch because I've never had any other probiotic cause this.

Also a posibility that a certain strain in the probiotic is what I needed and caused a major die off, but I can't continue with it because I'd have to wear a diaper.

True... there are bad bacterias. If you ever had a stool test done by Genova diagnostics (formerly Greater smokies lab) they do candida levels.

The test shows good bacteria, bad bacteria and non-pathogenic bacteria (neither good nor bad).

When I had this test done 5 years ago. It showed ZERO good bacteria even after taking the best probiotics on the market for over a year.

I'd really like to know what makes good bacteria STICK to the intestional wall cuz it's just not happen-in with me.

The probiotics are meant to flush out the bad bacteria to let your GI tract bacteria to recover.

Probiotic bacteria will be gone in a matter of days, you need to stop it at some point to let good bacteria colonize your GI tract.

How scary! It sounds like the probiotic was contaminated. I would stop taking it and contact the manufacturer. They need to know if there is a problem with their product.

Sorry Ninjaphire. I'm not understanding. I need to stop what?

I've had lots of little breaks with probiotics but my colon does not seem to colonize with good bacteria.

Some good things that should happen are less gas and bloating, good bm's

2 to 3 times a day, less GI pain.

None of this has gotten better.

Thanks

White covered stools?

Have you been checked for C-diff?

Yep white covered mucus marble hard bm's. But all thats gone now(except the constipation) sence stopping the probiotic.

It was brown mucus when I first started the probiotic and very foul dead smell then turned white a couple days after stopping. I had no other symptoms except for the above.

I'm sure I don't have c-diff.

I'm my ol' constipated self.

sorry if tmi.

TS96,

I put a pinch of epsom salt in water with all of my meals.

Can work wonders with keeping BM's going.

Reuteri pearls may stick and get farther into the GI tract than others. I am experimenting w/ them currently. They are supposed to help heal the lining also.

elizabeth,

I made a note of "killing bad bacteria"

Yes... that is likely the case here.

the first time my mom took pro biotics it "upset her stomach."

she wanted to stop them. eventually her doc told her that's not a bad thing.

now she takes em every morning

what causes the constipation? My husband takes fiber supplements, different brands, metamucil, generic, lately he's been taking cold milled organic flax seeds, and says they have seemed to help the most. But now his stools are bloody, I think from hemmorhoids? He's also taking cayenne and a bunch of other herbs in a glycerite. He is on methotrexate, plaquenil, prednisone and some others for RA. Thinking about doing a five day cleanse from Probio-Wellness. Any thoughts? Someone suggested the master cleanse diet, but he has already lost so much weight, and with the meds he's on he has to eat, and without them, he can't function. This one I have from Probio-Wellness says you can eat and it is not supposed to be harsh so he can go to work............

oh no, with his symptoms right now, do not do a cleanse of any kind. my gastro told me when we thought i had c. diff or colitis, never to cleanse at that time.

is the blood in the stools or coming from the rectum? blood in the stools will cause black stools. you won't be able to see it.

if the blood is red that's either from the lower colon or rectum.

i would try hemorroid suppositories for right now. and my doc has me on fiber capsules. two in the morning.

he's taking a ton of serious meds so they're probably just killing his gi system.

i couldn't take flax seed as it seemed to scour my whole system. i needed something more gentle.

Absolutely... but also not mentioned is the fact that TS likely needs something in addition to the probiotic to kill off the yeast.

Like garlic, OLE, oil of oregano... etc.. or Nystatin or Diflucan.

I just started taking Body Biotics and am very impressed so far! (does not specifically kill yeast)

blood is in the rectum. he has been using suppositories for a long time. The flax seed seems to help. It just seems that all of the fluids in his body have dried up. maybe a side effect to meds? his eyes are really dry, no saliva, so he is losing his teeth, and the colon issues. He drinks about a gallon of water a day. symptoms of sjogren's. wanting to get the dr. j in DC's contact info as we are only a few hours away.

Is he taking pharmaceutical quality fish oil?
This can help the sicca, or dryness of the eyes and mouth.

Cold pressed flaxseed oil can help too.
