So today would be day 5 on Levaquin.

The past couple of days on it, my feet and lower legs have been rather achy. I use a heating pad which seems to help.

I woke up this morning(around 4:00...ugh) with the most painful second toe.

I can't bend it and even the sheets pressing against it were almost unbearable. It's at or around the knuckle nearest my toenail, along the top of my toe and on the side nearest my big toe.

I'll be skipping my levaquin this morning and calling my llmd but wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything similar. Also, does this sound like a tendon issue, or how a tendon issue would start?

topaz,

that is a joint in your toe...not a tendon issue. Let me say that levaquin made every bone in my body ache...even my face and nose...

I discovered small bones that i had never been aware of...feet achey as well and muscles too. I did not notice any tendon issues.

Have had the pain when the sheets touching my feet even hurt... my toenails (big) even fell off....

I know that my doctor stressed to me to be prepared to hurt in the bones, joints, and muscles...and he was right.

As always, if you're really concerned, call your doctor...what dose are you at? I started at 500mg and had to cut back to 250. Then I alternated 250mg one week and 500mg the next...

Just ideas. feel better!

Thanks, feelfit.

I'm taking 500 mg once a day. Today I didn't take my dose and won't take another till I talk to my llmd.

This is a burning and pinching pain, doesn't really feel like a muscle ache at all. I've had plenty of those throughout my body and this just feels different. Possibly bone though I suppose. Like no other pain I've had before though and I'm even having trouble walking.

It's progressively getting worse as the day goes on. The toe is red, swollen, stiff, and now hurts down the whole length of it.

I've tried heat and cold on it, both hurt like crazy. I can't even touch it.

I've got a call in to my llmd and am waiting for a call back.

Just a little update here.

Llmd's office never called back yesterday so I ended up going to the emergency room.

Shortly after my previous post, the pain was getting unbearable and the redness and swelling began to move up my foot. That was a little scary.

Had xrays taken, which showed nothing unusual.

The doctor in the ER came to the conclusion that it was either cellulitis, or bart and/or lyme doing crazy things.

She felt that if it was a reaction to the levaquin, it would have occurred in a larger tendon, although she didn't totally rule out the possibility.

Since cellulitis is nothing to mess with, she decided to put me on Bactrim DS for 10 days, even though she wasn't 100% sure about the cellulitis diagnosis. Also gave me pain meds.

I followed up with my llmd today and he wants me to discontinue the levaquin.

So, looks like no more levaquin for me.

I see my llmd in a couple of weeks and we'll have to come up with another plan of action.

My toe is much better today. Less painful, red, and swollen.

Such a bizarre thing to happen out of nowhere like that. No cuts or breaks in the skin and went to bed feeling good.

Crazy.

my reactions are/were crazy on levaquin as well. 2 days off and I feel worse bone, joint and muscle pain....i think that it is/was hitting Mr. Bart pretty good.

Good luck Topaz..the bactrim may do wonderful things for you, pay attention, it has worked wonders for others...if it works well, maybe you can suggest that your LLMD try it for a longer course?

best,
Feelfit

Levaquin practically crippled me wtih tendinitis.
It took a year to get over what a few days of levaquin did.
I tell them I am allergic to it.

Lyme is like the flu. You can get it and recover, but you can always get it again.

I'm sorry, BugBarb.

If what I was having was indeed a reaction to the levaquin, then I think I'm pretty lucky that it happened only 4 days in before it could have done more damage.

Obviously my llmd thought that it could have or he wouldn't have taken me off so quickly. The whole thing was just so weird and fast moving and unique to any other feelings/aches I've had before. Definitely felt like nerve or tendon rather than muscle.

Feelfit, aside from the very slight lingering pain in the toe, I'm feeling pretty clear headed and pain free today.

I have no idea if the Bactrim has anything to do with that but I will certainly pay attention to how I'm feeling. It's the only antibiotic I'll be on for the next couple of weeks so that should be easy.

I'm sorry you're in the midst of the hell that is Levaquin(haha), but it for sure sounds like it is doing something for you. I'm a bit disappointed that I can't continue, yet feel that it's not meant to be for me right now.

Thanks again for your thoughts, suggestions, and comments. Much appreciated!

Well, it certainly sounds like you can't take the levaquin. I agree, it's a good thing you figured it out right away.

Even if you (or your llmd) are not 100% sure you can't take it, he obviously feels it's not worth the risk. And I think you feel the same way. I do.

I think it's natural to feel a little disappointed that it "didn't work out", but there are other fish in the sea [Smile] , and your llmd knows how to work around this.

Yeah Carly, I'm pretty confident in him. I sure hope there are some other fish in the sea that work for me!

I think I may be herxing a bit today from the Bactrim. Didn't expect that. I guess it could just be bactrim side effects though. Hard to tell.

Kind of flu like, anxious and jittery, headache, and nauseous. And TIRED, even though I got about 9 hours of sleep last night.

I'm not surprised to hear about the herxing from bactrim.

Glad to hear the toe is better and the problem was quickly identified.
