My daughter started meds last week (doxy). She is feeling very constipated now and was wondering if that is a symptom when trying to release the toxins? I'm getting worried because it's been about 4 days - how long can one go? I have never had this problem so I don't know? Thanks

If you run a quick search you will find many posts with excellent recommendations for constipation relief. (search can be found near the top of the page underlined in blue).

It is a very common problem. Sometimes changes in diet or mild dehydration can cause this. Make sure that your daughter is drinking plenty of water. Eat plenty of fruits, vegs, and whole grains.

A home remedy to try for constipation is a mixture of apple juice and prune juice (about half a cup of each). Warm it up and have her drink this.

If that doesn't work or she's not willing to try it you can purchase some Miralax OTC from the local pharmacy. You can try 1 capfull to start with mixed in her favorite drink. If that does not produce a BM take another capfull about 12hrs later. Take it twice daily until she has a BM. If her BM's start to become loose on this dose back down to 1cap per day or as needed.

If your daughter is very small or younger than 12 you will want to give her a lower dose, about half a capfull. Miralax is very safe. It can be given to babies (smaller doses though). It is not absorbed by the body. It works by pulling water into the intestines so that the powder forms a gel and pushes the waste out of the body.

Another thing that you can try is supplementing with Magnesium. That can help prevent/treat constipation. Gradually work up to tolerance. Remember to take your vitamins and minerals a couple hours away from Doxy.

And of course you can check with your doctor for more recommendations.

When I start hard treatment, I tend to get constipated. I think it is from feel so bad that I can't exercise or keep moving. Also, herxes can cause anxiety and tension which can make it worse. Lyme also has a way of messing with the GI tract.

Does she have any anxiety related symptoms?

Something that works well for me that was suggested on and IBS and stomach related issues forum is prune juice.

You take organic prune juice and simmer it down to half the amount. Put half back in bottle and take three tablespoons mixed with whatever juice you want (natural) or water. Do this daily once or twice a day until things start moving.

I've found this to be quite helpful. Reducing it down makes the prune juice more potent and it works more effectively. It's natural and there's no side effects. Just a thought to consider.
