Hi, I have chronic neuro-lyme (began around 1977)and my doctor has never mentioned Mepron. Can anybody explain this drug to me? It seems a lot of people here have taken it.

Thank you.

And while someone is explaining it, please tell me how you take it. It's about as thick as molasses and sure doesn't work well in one of those 2 teaspoon scoop-spoons.

Cost me $190 on BCBS health insurance and I'm taking it for Babesia. No side effects to note for me.

LizaJan,

Mepron is used for babesia infection, which a lot of us have. Have you been tested for it? It's used with a macrolide antibiotic like Zithromax/azithromycin ('zith') or Biaxin (clarithromycin).

Ott70:
it's great that they're covering it up to a point, that bottle is worth it's weight in gold. I had to watch it when the bottles were almost full- it was easy to overflow the spoon and make an expensive mess. I managed to lick the spoon and didn't find the taste too horrible. If that's your problem, maybe you can use an oral syringe to get 5 ml (that's 1 teaspoon) towards back of your mouth so you dont have to taste it. They sell oral syringes in the drugstore next to the pillboxes and they're marketed as being for giving medicine to babies. I haven't tried this, you'd have to probably pour the Mepron into a wider pill bottle or small jar and keep it sealed tightly the rest of the time.

My LLMD calls it "liquid gold"..

LisaJan its possible he hasnt mentioned it because of the cost....

I knew it was "expensive" but I still mentioned it to my LLMD, he wrote me a script... I went to drug store and it was OVER --WAY OVER a thousand bucks...so needless to say...I let them keep it---oh well (:

We struggled to get it out of the 2 tsp cup too but have found a solution that sworks well for us.

We use a metal measuring spoon and coat it with oil. Then we pour the mepron in, and it slides easily right off the spoon into your mouth! [Smile]

The other option is the medical measuring syringe.
If you get the mepron in the original white bottles they syringe fits flush perfect in the bottle and you can tip it upside down and draw in the exact dosage.
Then squirt that in your mouth.

NO mess and No waste. Just rinse the syringe and wait to use it again.

It has worked so perfectly for me the whole time ON mepron.

If they dispense in another bottle you may want to ask them what sizes of syringes they have at the pharmacy. NOt needle syringes.. Measuring syringes for medications. They usually have them behind the counters or even just hanging to purchase.

Ask them at the pharmacy and they can help you get one that fits snug in the bottle top. If you do not get one that is snug then it will not work well because you can not tip the bottle over and then getting at the medicine is impossible.

But I am thinking that is why they made them that way...

Good Luck.

IT is used to treat babesiosis (a malarial-like infection).

I took my first dose in a little dosage measuring cup. I licked and licked and licked and still couldn't get it all out.

As expensive (about $1700 a bottle) as it is and as crucial to my treatment, I knew I had to find a better way.

I poured water into my smallest size spoon (not baby or child, just not the big spoons), and then measured it in the dosage cup. 1 tsp. So, I've used a spoon since.

I think, though, that I've actually ended up with a little more than 1 tsp quite a few times. I think because it is so thick, the 1 tsp amount would pile up and so make the spoon look 'not yet full' and then I'd keep adding till the spoon was full.

I figured that out about a wk ago, and so now am pouring it more slowly and waiting for it to settle before I try to fill the spoon.
