Topic: Bicillin...aspirated and got blood...do I reuse syringe/medicine?

I know not to reuse the needle. Just wondering about the pre-filled syringe.
The location should have been okay. Very outer...maybe not enough "upper"? In terms of quadrants.
But I don't know if the medicine itself is contaminated now. My main question is if I can use the same pre-filled syringe.
Hubby is going out of town, so we would like to still do a shot tonight.
Second question is, would doing it in the same area still be okay, just maybe a little higher? Or should I use the opposite cheek. Which would be a pain b/c the one side is already numb. Hubby wants to go to bed soon b/c has to get up at 3:30 AM, so I don't want him to wait for the other side to numb.
Maybe it was just a fluke and we hit a capillary, not an actual vein?
Too late to call LLMD unless I call emergency line....this isn't an emergency right? If it in doubt, I'll just do nothing till tomorrow.

"OK, here's what I'm not so sure about. My doc told me that if there is blood on aspiration, you can't use that syringe. My ob/gyn college roommate told me yesterday that I just need to pull the syringe out a little and can then inject. Not sure if you are supposed to aspirate again or not.
Also, one time I did get blood. Tossed syringe #1. Inserted second syringe about 1/4 inch away. Got a pink liquid. Tossed syringe #2. Injected other side of butt. Third time was a charm, but lots of wasted med.
Doc told me that it's ok to inject if you get the sanguo whatever fluid. (Forget what it is called.)
You should double check with your doc about what to do."
So I think trying it in the same area (with a new syringe) is probably not a good idea.
Since I don't want to have to wait another hour for the cream to numb the other side, I'm gonna have another trained family member do another one tomorrow on the other side.
I will probably not reuse that syringe.
But if anyone else can confirm/deny this, still interested to hear what you know or what your doc told you.
And if for some reason what happened is something I should be worried about, please let me know. So far there is no blood pooling under the skin, so I think I just hit a capillary and I'm okay. Hubby never injected any Bicillin, so I think I'm safe.

Are you able to change the needles? I think the issue is mostly about not injecting bicillin into a vein by accident. I've always heard that you have to re-stick, but not that you have to throw out the medicine. If you're going to re-stick, you probably want a new needle as you dulled the old one a bit.

It is your blood that it is contaminated with. The main thing is, will you be able to tell if it is in a vein and there is more blood? If it is just a little bit perhaps you could expel a little bit of it and the rest would be OK. Your call on that one.
The main thing is that you need to be able to tell if it is in a blood vessel.
Definitely pick a spot a respectful distance away from that one for your next try.

I have used the medicine with blood in it. you want to be quick about it. I wouldnt wait too long to do it. so th eother cheek, beacse there is likely a hematoma in the other area and you will get blood back.
change needles.
dont save the meds for a long period.

I would start over with a new needle, new syringe, new site. Better safe than sorry.

Hoosier, are you rotating the ventrogluteal (hip area) sites with the dorsogluteal (butt area) sites?
If you are not familiar with the ventrogluteal sites run a quick google search. These sites are less painful (in my personal opinion) and you are less likely to hit a nerve or blood vessel there.

I didn't know it was ok to do it in the hip area. I wonder if we should try that because these shots are so darn painful for me

Casey, you don't have to subscribe to any threads to post comments. We're here to help each other. So just jump in with comments and questions.
Of course, if you have a different question then what was originally posted then you will want to start a separate thread. That way everyone gets the help that they need.
And about the ventrogluteal injection site, be sure to google it, look at diagrams and watch youtube video's to make sure that you hit the right spot.
If you know a nurse you can ask them to show you the spot too. That might be your easiest option.
