My heart is breaking this morning. My 14 year old is sinking into a deep depression and losing her will. She says she feels like she is going crazy. This scares me to death and kills me to see her feeling this way. A child that was so full of life and so sweet and very smart. I don't think the antibotics she is on (Monodox) form of doxy is strong enough to break the brain barrier to kill this in her head. It's the one thing we must treat that is really affecting her badly. She can deal with all the rest until she gets well. Has anyone experienced this yourself or with a child? What drug is best to treat neurological Lyme? I'm going to see the LLMD on 4/5 and will definately address this and the potency she is getting. She takes 100 MG twice per day right now. She's only on her first 3 weeks of treatment. I know it was to get worse before it got better but this part has not changed. She's been suffering for months and I'm so scared it will get worse. Thanks All.

I don't have any personal experience but I would call your llmd before even 4/5. Could this be a side-effect from doxy?

Good luck.

Hi Laurie....

the worst time ever for my daughter was in her teens....especially with all the hormones and changes they go through....

....it is very hard to watch as you said your daughter that was full of life be so sick ....

I felt like she was missing out on things....

you may want to call the doc about the depression he/she may lower the dose for a day or too to see if the depression lifts at all....

everyone is different in their doses of meds....and some meds can make depression worse....

you are a great mom for coming on and asking questions and reaching out....
hang in there she will get better....

the best thing you can do for her is having the right LLMD...
communicate with him/her....

I saw on another post you asked about constipation....ask your LLMD if she can take magnisium.....that can help a lot with that...

encourage your daughter that she will get better....and that you will never give up the fight in getting her better....

[group hug] mtree

Doxy made me so tired that I wanted to lie down and give up. Total lack of energy can make you feel even more depressed. My daughter did not have that reaction but another teen girl I know had bouts of crying while in treatment. Try to support her through this with lots of tender care, lots of rest, her favorite movies, get her nails done, etc. Of course checking with the dr and all that too. But I know that for us (my daughter and I) when we feel our sickest we try to watch funny movies and pamper ourselves. I know how hard it is to watch your child suffer. Getting through the school day is tough. I was in communication with her teachers and took her out of gym so she could rest. I asked them to be patient with her. Things will get better. Hang in there.

I have had a teen w/Ld, now well. She is herxing it sounds very much like to me. Doxy is one of the harder drugs because it penetrates the brain so well.

My son was on Doxy for months had very serious suicidal thoughts, derealization, anxiety, rage, mood swings, you name it. It was hard treating and watching him go through so much, as I have been in treatment as well.

Xanax helped him tremendously. He was on it throughout treatment and easily weaned down and off of it when he didn't need it anymore.

Oral Doxy has been shown in some studies to be as potent as IV and it does cross the bbb well. That is why she is "sinking" it is working in my opinion. The dose should be higher - double what she is taking, but let the LLMd decide when you see him/her.

Treatment is rough, you go through all emotions there are and some days you can feel very positive and others like you would rather die...nature of the beast.

She will get better, kids and teens do, period. My son was in treatment almost 2 years until he was well enough to stop abx. Finishing up treatment w/Bicillin IM injections.

Here is an article that will help you understand the "brain" effects: http://www.thehumansideoflyme.net/

I also recommend she detox. Activated Charcoal saved my son from going to the hospital he was so out of it. So, I wrote and article about it here, with other links and information: http://www.truthaboutlymedisease.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=286

Hang in there - she is experiencing exactly what this disease/herxing does to get to wellness.

Three weeks in - my guess is that she is herxing.

The emotional stuff can happen to anyone - I am 6'1" 230 lbs and used to (when I first got sick)play every sport there is and I cried like a baby throughout most of my treatment, no matter what it was. Doxy was one of them.

I even considered checking into a mental institution on a few occasions until I started to understand the herxing aspects of treatment.

Personally, I believe that the bacteria gives off toxins when it is alive and more when killed. If you do not detox properly they will keep on recirculating throughout the body. Crying is also a way for the body to eliminate the toxins in the head area - for me, everytime I cried I always felt better for a short time until they built up again.

Detox is extremely important. When my son was twelve and sick with lyme and babs I had to force him to do things to detox until he realized it made him feel better. Activated charcoal, sauna, epsom salt baths are a few that helped us tremendously.

It can and will get better - I will keep you guys in my prayers.

All My Best,
Scott

It's not a side effect of doxy.

It's hormonal issues and neurotoxis.

Treat Lyme aggressive. 200mg of doxy is not enough.
And detox!!

Hey, I suffered from depression really bad for a long time, I got on lexapro (anti-depressant) and within 1.5 hours the depression left and hasn't been back. I feel healthy too. Give it a try, you should be able to get a sample from your doctor.
