http://www.darksideofsleepingpills.com/ch3.html First, remember that most people do not need 8 hours of sleep per night. That old idea just is not so. In our studies in San Diego, the average adult is actually asleep only between 6 and 6.5 hours a night. National polls give similar results.

My doctor says its different for different people. When you are healthy you can easily determine how much sleep your body needs.

When I feel better I usually do fine with around 6-7 hours of sleep. 8 Hours is less common for me. With Lyme I need around 10 to 12 hours when feeling sick. The sleep quality is so poor that extended duration becomes the norm.

I wish I only needed 6 hours sleep. I need about 10 and my daughter, who is the sick one, needs 12.

Hey, I don't know who did that study but I live in San Diego and I need 8 hours of sleep. If it is much below that, I am usually toast the next day.

Obviously since we're all Lyme patients, our hours are going to be exaggerated and abnormal compared to studies done on the general population.

when feeling better I am good with 7 hours which is what i am currently getting, and on work days I get a nice 20 minute snooze on the bus ride home.
When sick, obviosuly that changes and I can sleep whole days away.

- That site does not pertain to lyme patients at all - or even to those with any illness or major dysfunction of the adrenal system as do lyme patients.
I also think sweeping statements can be dangerous. Which ever doctors say a person can get by on 6 hours of sleep are probably the same ones mad because intern and residents in medical colleges are now being cut back to 80 hour work weeks. -

In an ideal world we would all just wake up naturally without alarm clocks and the like.
I find that when I allow that to happen, which is on weekends, I sleep roughly 7.5 hours-8 at the most. If I wake up and try to go back to sleep, I feel horrible after waking up the second time.
Naps are amazing though-I love them.
Before getting some treatment though I could literally sleep alllll day. It really depends on so many factors.

Funny, coz I remember a study a few years ago stating that 9 hours per night is IDEAL for the average person for functioning, thinking, anti-aging, restorative value. Nevermind for sick people.
Any study can be skewed however an individual wants to support his/her foregone conclusion.
People may not NEED 8, they can "get by" on less. but who wants to just "get by". it's about Quality of Life.
He states that people are just as happy or was it Happier? on less sleep? LOL.
I and anyone I've ever known who doesn't sleep enough is a testimony to the contrary. Whether they are "outgoing" individual or introverts.
Sleep deprivation can make one lose their mind. Maybe that is what's happened to him.
BTW: it looks to be an anti-sleeping pill campaign really, although he barely mentions it on that site.
He may just be an anti-sleeping pill zealot bending the studies or so-called "facts" to fit his perspective--not only do we not need sleeping pills, we don't need that much sleep at all. It's a fallacy! talk about taking it to an extreme.
We don't know anything about that in the lyme world, do we? Posts: 571 | From Massachusetts | Registered: Oct 2008
