I recently had both igenix testing and a Gastrointestinal Profile test done by Metametrix lab.
For the Igenix, I've posted results in another thread (I had a few bands pos and IND and a bunch neg), but for the Gastro profile I had a positive result for several parasites (see below).
My Dr has prescribed MEBENDAZOLE (to be taken twice a day for 3 days, in two courses, the 2nd course 3 weeks apart and then ALINIA, twice a day for 6 days.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this if you've also been bitten by a tick?
Anyone know if these drugs work? Or have any effect on Lyme related bacteria as well?
I was bitten by one 4+ years ago, and only just now got Igenix testing done (all my previous lyme tests showed up negative (well, I had one pos band, but all dr's told me it was negative despte my symptoms).
Here are the results:
Blastocystis hominis: Positive
Dientamoeba fragilis: Positive Parasite present; taxonomy unavailable: Positive (A taxonomy unavailable finding likely indicates an ingested protozoan and not a human parasite. It does not indicate treatment unless patient symptoms and other inflammatory markers are consistent with parasite infection.)
Trichuris trichiura: Positive
Adiposity Index:
Firmicutes 83 H  <= 80
Bacteroidetes 17 L  >= 20
The Adiposity Index is derived by using DNA probes that detect multiple genera of the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Abnormalities of these phyla may be associated with increased caloric extraction from food.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!!
Drew

never heard of the med you will be taking for two rounds. I'm not of much help, other than I'll be starting Ivermectin for parasites in the next few weeks.
My LLMD says that parasites respond to abx, therefore offering relief of symptoms, but they are not killed by abx.
This could be why I respond favorably to ALL abx, but never fully get well and get sick again once stopping.
I'll be watching for more posts by you to see how you are responding to this treatment.

Alinia works on small parasites like Giardia and on some protozoans, possibly including babesia. I've had good experience with it for babesia. Some LLMD's believe it works on Lyme cysts also (it does break up giardia cysts, which is a totally different organism). It's a very safe drug, I believe. Check it out on rxlist.com for more info on side effects and safety.
It's very expensive in the US, but if you get an Indian generic, its only $70/month. Here's where I've been buying it:
I had EXACTLY what's pictured come pouring out of me after 6 months of strong antparasitic herbs and then salt/c.
I am still getting rid of the smaller ones after 4 yrs. Your doctor is very smart to have tested you for parasites. Gael

Thanks for the info. And yes, my urine has turned green. Or florescent yellow or something anyway! I am having some stomach pain, but it comes and goes. "intdeterminate"...I had some pos bands and some IND bands. NOt sure what guideline they use, but I am going to see an LLMD for confirmation.
Thanks,
Drew

Hi Drew,
I had the stool test that showed - Parasites - Taxonomy unavailable.
How did you get the positive tests for specific worms? Was it a blood test or a stool sample?
I'm sure that I have parasites but I don't know if the specific types would determine the type of treatment.
I have Alinia here but I haven't touched it because my non-LLMD said "that stuff'll kill ya"

The taxonomy unavailable is confusing. It talks about certain protozoa...isn't there a tick borne protozoa? I can't recall, but I thought I read that somewhere....
Huh. I trust my Dr. implicitly. I am sure she wouldn't prescribe Alinia if it "that stuff'll kill ya" :-)
But hey...who knows, frankly I'd rather not take drugs, one truly never knows how your body will react. I'll let you know how I do on it. So far just some stomach cramping and very yellow urine. I just want to kill the little buggers!
Thanks!
Drew

Yes, I believe that is the test I had. I guess it didn't show any specific parasites.
I would be very interested in your results with the medicine you are using.
Please post or send me an PM if you remember.
The main side effect I have heard about Alinia is Diarrhea.
Good luck.

I had a similar Metametrix result and ran Alinia, but it didn't do much (didn't hurt though).
I'd like to try Mebendazole and/or Ivermectin. If you throw enough darts, you're bound to hit something. Good luck.

We have been working with an md/homeopath on detox.
He prescribed a week-long course of alinia, then a few weeks later, a ten day course of ivermectin.
I also took a homeopathic called Helmin by Pekana for three months.
This md says there is no real good test for parasites, so he treats those with immune problems like us without testing.
For me, the parasites did not go quietly. The ivermectin in a rough drug, but it works. The alinia was easier to tolerate. I could tell both were working.
The helmin caused constipation, but I didn't feel any negative side effects other than that.
Good luck; you will probably feel better after tx and your lyme tx should be more effective as a result.

MEBENDAZOLE is given to animals also. My vet has given it to my pets on numerous occasions.

Just an update, so last night after my 2nd day of Alinia I started to feel terrible heart palpitations. Lasted for hours and kept me up most of the night. My MD feels it COULD be a herx reaction, but wasn't aware of any side effect of Alinia that would cause that.
They told me to proceed and take activated charcoal, but if symptoms persist, I could always stop treatment for a few days and restart if it was that bad...
Anyway, just figured I'd give an update. I feel like garbage today unfortunately. Not getting much sleep doesn't help!
