Simply put, it is an increase in symptoms when treatment begins. Current symptoms get worse, new ones appear, old symptoms appear. It is assumed the die of LD creates toxins in the body that cause herxing, detoxing is a must. Herxing is different for everyone. Herxing can go on for quite awhile and get worse with abx changes or better.

After having a rash for almost two weeks, I finally got to see my regular Dr. and he started me on 100mg doxy twice daily the day he did the Lyme, ANA and Rocky mountain SF test. I started them the night of March 29th and during the night on March 31 I awoke with a racing heart.
At first I told my husband I needed him to take me to the hospital, I then asked him to call 911. My heart felt like it was going to explode. By morning at the hospital my rash was bright red, lacey and running together. My Dr. asked the surgeon to do a biopsy and so the surgeon checked me in the morning. By the time he came back 12 hours later, he could only find two places on my stomach to biopsy.
The next morning I was released from the hospital and a week later, I still feel week and like my heart is working in overdrive. Several times I have awoken in the night with heart palpitations.
Since then my Dr. got positive labs for AB Lyme. He told me that all the claritin, benadryl and steriods I had been on caused my sympathetic nervous system to go into overdrive and that is what caused the incident with my heart. While in the hospital he started me on .5mg 2x's daily of Ativan for my nerves.
My question is was the incident with my heart racing and my losing movement of all limbs for several hours along with the severe rash symptons considered a herx? I had been on Doxy for about 48 hours.
