I am getting a port today. My doctor is out of the country and only the receptionist is in the office. The pharmacy does not have the correct orders. If I remember correctly, I should receive one gram of rocephin 2Xper day the first week and 2 grams 2X per day there after. The pharmacy informs me they can send out 2 gram viles. Can I use one-half of each vile? Or what should I do?

HI Butterfli,

I wanted to check on you and see how everything is going with your port.

If you are getting a 2 gram push I would think that you can use half. There is a cap on it that you can remove and replace. Just be sure that it is very clean.

I don't know what your instructions are. I did saline before and after the medicine and then Heparin after.

Take Care.

I had a port for 6 years, a record at our hospital. My husband took meticulous care of it to be sure it did not clog or infect.

He used more heparin than necessary to be sure it stayed open. He said he used 4 or 5 cc. If you are not a hemopheliac this will not hurt you and will be certain that it is clean and clear.

He also used lots of betadyne before accessing it.

When they removed my port the surgeon said it looked brand new.

No, it's not wierd. I started with IV bags and then changed to a push which is much quicker.

You can still use 1/2 a bag if you need to but there should be a small red cap provided that you can use to seal it.

I'm so glad everything went well!

I also started on IV bags and switched to a syringe, but my bags didn't need to be refrigerated.
