Hi I was diagnosed as having Lyme's by a general practioner about 2 weeks ago. Suddenly started having symptoms of red, swollen joints (wrists, fingers, knee, ankles) about 4 days before I went to the doctor. The doctor didn't perform a Lyme's test, felt it would be a waste of money since she thinks I obviously have Lymes. Put me on Amoxiillin 500mg 3x day for 4 weeks. I am currently about at the end of week 2. I was very physically active the first week of treatment and would suffer horrible pain in the evenings as well as fever of 101-102. I am feeling better week two of treatment, although tired. Did a little yesterday and had shoulder, wrist, ankle and hip soreness last night and today. My question is: would I be better off to not be at all physically active during this time or is it better to be active and suffer the pain. Would either course help me get better sooner? thanks kaf

- Some exercise is vital, yes. But no aerobics. With LYME, or other infections, aerobics can damage the heart and the immune system - and adrenals.
Gentle walking, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, strength training, etc. are good - but not every day. See link below.
First, you need to see an ILADS-educated Lyme Literate MD. You still have many months of treatment ahead of you. I'm glad your GP recognized lyme and, for a GP, 4 weeks' treatment is huge. But, it's falls way short of what you will need.
You also need to be assessed for a full range of other tick-borne infections.
From Dr. Bruno's "Fainting and Fatigue" in the Spring 1996 CFIDS Chronicle
Post-polio expert Dr. Richard Bruno points out that physical over-activity is the biggest cause of post-polio symptoms. [3]
Excerpt:
``when mice infected with Coxsackie B3 were forced to swim in a warm pool, the virulence of the virus was drastically augmented.
In fact, viral replication was augmented 530 times. This did horrendous things to the animals' hearts. We all know that to play squash with the flu can lead to heart attacks.
Much the same danger can be courted by undertaking hard exercise with M.E. (CFS).'' - End quote.
=======================
* This explains WHY you need an ILADS LLMD or ILADS LL ND (naturopathic doctor) to guide your treatment protocol.
CONTROVERSY CONTINUES TO FUEL THE "LYME WAR" - 2007
" . . .To treat Lyme disease for a comparable number of life cycles, treatment would need to last 30 weeks. . . ."
". . . If all cases were detected and treated in the early stages of Lyme disease, the debate over the diagnosis and treatment of late-stage disease would not be an issue, and devastating rheumatologic, neurologic, and cardiac complications could be avoided. . . ."
- Be sure to read the entire article so you understand why most doctors are not aware of lyme issues.

I would say don't exercise too vigorously while your body is fighting infection. That is my opinion. If you feel it's helping you overall, great (what do I know, i'm not a doctor)....but you don't want to exercise so much that it becomes a burden on your body.
But staying active is good if you are capable....things like walking, mild weight lifting, etc. will help your treatment. Once you start to feel a little better, don't be afraid to do things like walk 5 min, jog 1 min, walk 5 min, etc.
Above all, listen to your body....is it telling you it wants to exercise or it doesn't? etc.

- As lyme really attacks our adrenal system, to help support your energy is a safe way, adrenal support is important. So are good self-care techniques. Here are some top choices for your research basics in this area. ------------
Cordyceps is recommend here:
This is included in Burrascano's Guidelines, but you may want to be able to refer to it separately, too:

- Did you also supplement with a good PROBIOITIC while on Amoxicillin?
If not, that is important to add now, away from the medicine. You might also consider getting some Olive Leaf Extract as a vitamin shop. That will also help fight the candida (systemic yeast) infection that most often is a result of antibiotic (abx) use.
All through treatment, you will need to be on Probiotics. And, that alone may or may not be enough. If not, OLE is a good addition. Also take at a different time from probiotics, though.
All this is explained in the Singleton book above. It's the very best book to help you understand this process and what self-help actions matter the most.

Keebler, I love reading your posts, you are so thorough. You need to be on the so called "lyme Show" that is suppose to happen on the "DR.S" t.v. show, and teach them a few things. :)

- jasek, oh . . . now that would be a pretty picture, indeed. I still flop around like a stuck pig with even the slightest sound or flash. I'm sure that would be quite instructional. I also can only talk with someone when I'm reclining. I'd need a special chaise lounge with a seat beat to keep me from launching to the rafters if someone should burp.
No, for now, I just pass along links. I do hope that if that show is a "go" that ILADS and LDA will be there with the UOS film crew for support. -
