My kids' LLMD says that if you don't pair rifampin with another abx, it will stop working in couple of days.
I have recently taken my kids off of abx and am trying herbs and homeopathy through a homeopathic practioner.
Two of my kids who were on Rifampin are becoming more emotional and angry and have irrational tantrums since stopping it and starting herbs. I don't think this is a herx b/c it is gradually getting worse. The Rifampin helped these symptoms to go away so I am concerned that they still need it. I am looking for herbal bart treatments right now but don't have a good herbalist or naturopath yet.
I wonder if I combined Rifampin with an antimicrobial herb if that would be sufficient to make the rifampin do its job. I really don't want to put them on another antibiotic along with the Rifampin.
I would love to hear what your LLMD's opinion is on Rifampin and whether you know anyone that has taken it either alone or with herbs and not another abx and had success.
Thanks,

Mine says Rifampin becomes resistant on its own in 3 days. Said it must always be paired with something.

I wish I could help, but my LLMD also has always had me on more than just one abx when I'm on Rifampin either IV or orally.
I never questioned why since I know he knows what he is doing, but my suggestion would be to contact your LLMD and ask him if the herbs would be a replacement for the second.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I was just told by my LLMD to take Rifampin alone for 3 weeks and see if symptoms get better (so we can see if Bart is a player)
How could the bacteria become resistant just because rifampin is being used alone?
Makes no sense.

I took rifampin for 3 mths alone. I felt so much better during that time period. It was rough the first couple weeks but after that all I seen was improvement in some bart sx.
Been off for about 10 days and I am trying to use rife for bart....not hitting it yet.

Rifampin resistance in e-coli is a classic microevolution experiment in colleges everywhere.
Rifampin resistance is extremely easy for bacteria to acquire, but when it does work (for TB, for instance) it has proven to be very useful. Thus, combination therapy is used to ensure that so many of the bacteria are wiped out they cannot evolve resistance and pass it on to future generations.
I would HIGHLY advise against EVER using Rifampin alone, as doing so could invalidate its use when you really need it. There are still drugs you can pair it with if you want to attack Bartonella primarily - Bactrim/Septra for instance, if you can handle sulfa drugs.,
