Has anybody had this? My PCP thinks it may be the cause of my recent fever: I had no itching but they are being cautious and holding the Bicillin for now: I guess Penicillin is one of the biggest culprits.

Yes I did from Bactrum.
I did not have a rash either but
was so ill. I was violently throwing
up and had the chills so bad that 6 blankets
could not get me warm. I should have gone to the
ER. Reminded me of what happen to Wild Condor
when she had Sepsis. I took tons of Bendadryl
and it took days to a week to get it all out
of my system.

How many shots are you doing per week? How high is your fever?

My teen son would get fevers immediately after the shot that lasted about 24 hours after the shot on (American)Bicillin LA. Later at his LLMd's approval he went on generic Bicillin LA (made by Sandoz) from Mexico and he would never get a fever with the generic. In fact, he got well within 9 months.

Fevers (according the side effect insert) can be a hypersensitivty reaction.

But Dr. B in his guidelines (pg. 17) says the 4 week flare (herxing) can resemble serum sickness.

The actual definition of serum sickness (from: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/serum+sickness )is:

"A hypersensitive reaction to the administration of a foreign serum, characterized by fever, swelling, skin rash, and enlargement of the lymph nodes"
Or
"An allergic reaction, such as vomiting, skin rash, etc., that sometimes follows 2-3 weeks after an injection of a foreign serum".

Have you had fevers on other penicillins, like amoxicillin, etc.?

I kinda thought it was coming on for a week before I got acutely sick: my pulse was fast, and I was sweating. I never took my temp, so I have no idea what it was til my husband said, "you feel hot." at that point it was 101.5, and over the next two days it went to 103. At that point LLNP took me off all meds: I had no enlarged lymph nodes; just body aches and the fever. I have never had fevers on penicillin. StacyB, how did they diagnose your serum sickness?
Lymebytes, I have no ideas if my Bicillin is generic or not.
It has been about a week since the last shot, and the fever is just about gone. Bummer, cause Bicillin was doing good things

I am curious: how were you diagnosed? With blood tests or clinically?

What is done about serum sickness? Just stop meds and wait it out? I suspect I may have it.

I may have had it from another cephalosporin drug, but it can be hard to distinguish serum sickness from herx.
