he is 5 and allergic to amoxy, too young for doxy.

does anyone know the dosage for children. he is taking 3/4 teaspoon 2x a day, which is 185 mg. i think. want to make sure it is enough. he weighs 32 lbs. thanks, maureen

my math says 187.5 mg in 3/4 tsp.
he is taking 2 doses per day = 375 mg /day
the weight 32 lbs = 14.54 kg
375/14.54 = 26.7 mg/kg/day

Here is what glaxo smith kline says:

Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
20 mg/kg/day divided b.i.d.

Acute otitis media
30 mg/kg/day divided b.i.d.

Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
30 mg/kg/day divided b.i.d.

Impetigo
30 mg/kg/day divided b.i.d.

based on this you are close to but slightly below
the 30mg/kg/day desired dose for the above conditions. You would need to check with a pediatric lyme LLMD to get lyme specific
dose information for children.

From Dr B's guide:

Cefuroxime axetil- Oral alternative that may be effective in amoxicillin and doxycycline
failures. Useful in EM rashes co-infected with common skin pathogens.
Adults and pregnancy: 1g q12h and adjust. Children: 125 to 500 mg q12h
based on weight.

It appears you at least are within this range.

Wish I could be of more help.

Beachinit

thank you beachnit. i also saw that he is within the 125 to 500 mg range, but can't find anything online specifically for lyme related to weight.

i am pretty sure a lyme pediatrician will not advise anything unless i saw one, which could be weeks away and i am treating immediately, so that wouldn't do me any good, unfortunately.

i am treating based on a tick bite at this point. i just want to actually avoid lyme if the tick was carrying it. i don't want to just increase his dosage on my own though because i know too much of ceftin can cause convulsions (warning signs of overdose). so i guess i will just have to stick with the 187 mg. at this point, which is 3/4 teaspoon.

anyone else have some info on this?

thanks, maureen
