i just saw a show that says there is a new very deadly strain of c. diff they are calling the "arizona" strain.
it is supposed to be 20X more deadly than regular c. diff.
it is targeting people with chronic illnesses (that's us), elderly, young, hiv, and people who take abx.
they said to be very careful and to wash your hands, use plenty of disinfectants, and shower. also be vigilant in hospitals.
10 people are dead so far.
has anyone heard of this? how will this affect people with lyme who have to take abx or be hospitalized?
another strain to worry about.

I have not heard about this BUT my husband works for a pharamaceutical company that is considering making a C.Diff vaccine. He just told me this a few days ago.

Do you think this could all be prevented if they also gave them probiotics?

Thanks for this link.
Kelmo - I think probiotics are key here, esp S. Boulardii.
I also think that more hospitals need to change their sterilization practices - alcohol does not kill C Diff spores, nor does antibacterial soap.
Excellent hand-washing with real soap is key, and cleaning surfaces with bleach.
