I never did IV antibiotics, so I was wondering, are probiotics just as important during IV antibiotics as oral antibiotics? Do the IV antibiotics affect the digestive tract just as much?

I was just wondering for my sister-in-law who is in the hospital right now (not Lyme related). She is on antibiotics for a serious infection. I'm assuming IV antibiotics, but I'm not sure. At the hospital, are the antibiotics delivered in a continuous drip, or a few times a day? I want to give her probiotics to take, but I'm wondering when I should tell her to take them.

Yes, both oral and IV antibiotics will impact your GI flora and enter your digestive system. You need to be on Sacc. boulardi (brand name Florastor) to protect yourself against clostridium difficile bacteria. That supplement is especially important when in a hospital!!! Ask for it, it may be on the hospital formulary. C. diff is very bad in hospitals so make sure she takes that ASAP, as well as yogurt and something like Theralac or Ultraflora, or VSL #3. (you can order them all online)

For IV antibiotics it does not matter when you take your probiotics. For oral meds, you should space them out as much as possible from antibiotics. Good luck to your sister in law. [Smile]

Probiotics are good for everyone; even healthy people should take one probiotic a day or eat yogurt everyday.
