well ya'll i have been in the hospital for diverticulitis. the pain got so bad i couldn't stand it.

here's what my report said:

there are no abnormally dilated loops of small or large bowel to suggest bowel obstruction. there is mild low level inflammation around the sigmoid colon containing multiple diverticula suggesting early diverticulitis. no abscess or free air.

first, i called my sister. she said "oh for pete's sake. there's nothing wrong with you. you're getting old". she's also the one that told me radiologists don't have to have a bed side manner because they're ___holes...which explains her manner.

i spent 4 hours sitting before i even got in. but i did get an iv of flagyl and then one iv of cipro. they prescribed flagyl three times a day and cipro twice a day.

it's making me really sick to my stomach but that could be the diverticulitis. am not hungry. lower abdominal area is sore and tender. am having diahhrea.

my question is: they said i absolutely have to finish these abx. but what are these high levels going to do for the lyme?

i tried a high level of flagyl once before and it really just put me down and i had to back off.

my sister said it sounds like my infection is not all that bad so i could back off the dosages and just do twice a day.

i can't get into my gastro for 6-8 weeks.

anybody had this problem of being treated for one thing by high abx and it really causes problems with the lyme?

How long do they want you to take the flagyl and cipro?

Also, you definitely want to get rid of the diverticulitis problem since it could actually kill you if you let it go--ruptured colon spreads contents into abdomen and you have a crisis.

So, you have to make that your first priority.

Let us know how long you have to be on the meds. Who knows, maybe they will make you feel great. If they gave them to you IV, they are in your blood stream in a good dose (equivalent to being on high dose orals for a number of days) and it sounds like you are doing fine so far.

Randibear, I recently had my first bout with diverticulitis and had to take both of those abx. My Lyme symptoms are minimal now, and that did not change during that treatment, but I had a terrible time with Cipro side effedts and had to go off it. Be careful with that one....issues with it can be long term.

Diver stinks, doesn't it?!

I would take the full dose as prescribed. You need to knock out the acute infection and inflammation. Stick with soft, easy foods, and lots of fluids until your gut feels better. Then you can return to your normal diet and pursue treatment for Lyme.

And don't forget to take your probiotics (acidophilus and S.Boulardii).

If you feel up to it, you can continue your exercises while on cipro. Just be aware of your body and try not to push yourself too hard.

And eat what you can. Maybe try some chicken or beef broth to start. Add some saltines or plain toast (not whole grain!). Regular jello and frozen sherbet. Plain cheerios. Plain baked potato, white rice, or noodles. These are easy to digest foods. They can help you get some quick nutrients and allow your stomach to get used to food again.

As you tolerate the simple foods over the next couple days gradually add in some soft cooked vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats, then whole grains. Listen to your body and add foods as tolerated.

*Hugs* I hope you feel better soon.

i'm still holding on but not eating. down another three pounds.

can't tolerate practically anything but a teeeny bit of scrambled egg and applesause.

still on flagyl 3 times a day cipro twice a day but it's awful.

the nausea/diahhrea is a killer. the cure is worse than the divertculitis.

as usual, absolutely NO support and that's making it really tough.

depression is setting down, crying, anxiety. am in pretty dark place right now.
