Meanx is Rx B-12.

I took it instead of the shots.

I also switched from taking daily methyl B12 shots to Metanx. Metanx is a combination of methyl B12, and the active forms of B6 and folic acid.

Check out the Metax website, they explain how it works in great detail, easy to understand. http://www.metanx.com/

You should also be aware that your pharmacy may try to give you a generic version if your doctor did not mark "prescribe as written" on the RX. Do not get the generic form because it does not have the right form of folic acid. Insist on the brand only. And your insurance may not pay for it because they consider it a vitamin.

I believe that it is worth the cost, much cheaper than the shots.

I was prescribed Metanx 2 weeks ago and just started it today- for chronic burning head pain. It certainly made me flush and feel warm. If anything, perhaps it is increasing blood flow throughout the body that may help meds work better? I guess we will see...

Some people get sicker on high doses of the active form of folic acid because they have certain methylation cycle blocks. Unblocking with high doses of the active form of folate can make one very sick.

Briefly, those who have this problem cannot effeciently convert dietary folic acid to the active form that their body can use. One consequence of this problem is impaired ability to handle toxins. Some speculate that a relatively high number of chronic lyme patients have some of these blocks.

If you have this problem, you will start to mobilize toxins when you take high doses of the active form of folic acid. You may start to mobilize heavy metals which would require specific supplements to bind and remove them from your system. Nothing to fool around with on your own in my opinion.

Many doctors are unaware of the ramificaitons of taking high dose active folic acid for a specific subset of the population. My sisters doctor prescribed prescription high dose active folic acid for her and she had to stop taking it after a few months. Her pharmicist told her that many people can't tolerate it long term.

I have no idea if any of you have this problem but you might so I wanted to give you a heads up. Please check the archives here using the term "methylation" for links and other info.

Dr. Amy Yasko usually prescribes no more than 400 mcg active folate for people who are affected with these problems. Metanx has over 7X's that amount. Not a problem for some people but a terrible problem for others. If you search the archives you will find links to a wealth of information about these issues.
