Hi. Is IM Rocephin as effective as IV Rocephin?
A little explanation...I have an allergy to plastic and had an allergic reaction to the PICC line when I did IV two years ago. I am also allergic to many/most/all of the antiseptics, tapes, and dressings used for PICC lines etc.
I am scheduled to get a port. I had thought there was one without plastic...but doctors cant seem to find..
I am currently living on a remote island off coast of Puerto Rico which is lovely (awesome) but has bad medical care, humidity etc. not great conditions for having a port. I was thinking I could deaccess after each IV treatment, but recently heard that is not a good idea...
My plan was to have the port put in in states, hang at my parents house for a few weeks and then go back to Puerto Rico. But I am not sure about getting nonplastic port, nervous about having port there... so I was thinking..
Is IM Rocephin as effective as IV Rocephin?
Anyone know of a totally nonplastic port?
If I have port, can I deaccess myself after I learn the right sterile technique? How many times a week is it safe to deaccess?

Hi K, You asked: Is IM Rocephin as effective as IV Rocephin?
I'm told that it is not. IV gets better CNS penetration and you can get higher doses than with IM.
I was on IM for around 6 months and had much better improvement than with orals but had to stop due to painful lumps where the medication was injected. This seems to be a common problem for many. I can deal with a lot of pain but after awhile this was so painful that I could hardly sit down and I was waking up all thorugh the night because of the pain.
I am told that there is a hypoallergenic port available but I don't know anything more about it. I'll be getting one eventually and I'll have to look into it but am just holding my treatment for now while I deal with other things.
Good luck.
