My llmd has prescribed Chemet to chelate elevated mercury in my blood....my insurance will not cover it and it is very expensive.
Does anyone know anything about this drug? Is there a comparable alternative that may be more reasonably prioed?
Just wanted to hear your opinions before I speak with llmd.
Thank you!

Hi JJ29,
I don't know about an alternative, but both my kids, ages 13 and 15, have been on it since March.
Their mercury, lead, and assorted other heavy metals tested high. It has been effective so far.
They were retested a couple of weeks ago and their levels have come down quite a bit in the past 3 months. The doc says 6 mos. to a year to get rid of all the metals.
So, it might be worth it if you can swing it financially to use this drug. We are fortunate that our insurance covers it.
If you have a compounding pharmacy in your area, you might give them a call and see what they have to say about alternatives.
Good luck.

Thank you Sparkle for the links. I did not know that chemet is actually DMSA!
i also found out yesterday that my insurance will pay for the drug after all. It's a good thing I called my insurance co. to check.
It seems that the pharmacy tech typed in the script info incorrectly which caused insurance denial. This has been a lesson for me to always verify what the pharmacy tells me with my insurance carrier.

The DMSA is $40 for 45 - 100mg caps.
How much is the drugstore charging? Just curious...

Sparkle, I'm not sure if this figure is correct as it was quoted by the pharmacy tech who made a mistake with my script, but he told me that it was going to cost me $450 for 50 pills...I think this amount is for more than 50 pills.
Anyway, fortunately, I was told that my insurance copay will be only $20 for 50 pills.
