Hi all,

I am so limited in what I can take for a bart drug. Rifampin couldn't take because of severe medication interaction, Levaquin have severe anxiety.....my LLMD suggested we try Bactrim. However, I'm HIGHLY allergic and by highly allergic I mean I break out in hives all over my body. My allergist claims that she can "desensitize" me to Bactrim and that I will be able to tolerate it. Her protocol involves a day in the hospital giving me tiny doses I believe of IV Bactrim. My question are:

Does anyone have any successful experiences being desensitzed to a medication they are highly allergic to?

Where on earth can I actually get IV Bactrim (from Maryland) no hospital/pharmacy carries it?

Can Bactrim be successful for some people for Bart?

Please let me know fellow Lymies! Thanks!

Back in 2001, I was seeing Dr H in Hyde Park, NY. He was suggesting this for me also, but he did say it was an involved procedure.

That was 9 years ago, so maybe things have changed since then, but when asking my GP dr back then,(that was treating me via dr H) he stated it was a very complex and very tricky procedure and he did not rec. me having it. Thus, I never did.

Again, maybe things have changed since then, and maybe it depends on what drug one is allergic too? Mine was Rocephin after 4 months of IV.

Didn't work for me.

Went in for the day, had tiny doses, built up over the course of the day.

Benadryl and epinephrine on hand.
No allergic response.

Left with the script, got it filled, started taking it, no problem, eighth day, whole body rash.
On to the Benadryl.
Off of the Bactrim.

I was told to take Nutramedix Sparga drops (20 drops twice a day) along with the Bactrim DS to help detoxify the sulphur component of the Bactrim.
So far no problems and I have been on it for 6 weeks.

May I ask...

If you've never taken this drug before and don't know if you are allergic...

If you were to have a reaction, would it likely be just a rash or a life-threatening reaction?

I've heard of others who have desensitized and had success.
