About 2 years ago when I did not know I had Lyme, and was feeling pretty bad, I thought I may need a liver detox and tried some detox with milk thistle. After about 3 days, my symptoms were really bad and I had to stop taking the detox. I never understood why that happened when milk thistle is supposed to be good for your liver. Now that I found out I have lyme, I am taking a course of treatment and my liver enzymes are starting to rise. My LLMD wants me to start the milk thistle again to help with the enzymes but I know that I had that bad reaction in the first place. I decided that I have to try again and I started with a small dose, (one capsule). About 2 hours after, I felt a slight increase in brain fog that I could only attribute to taking the milk thistle. I have been tested and found that I am not allergic to the ragweed family in which milk thistle is derived. Does anyone else get this reaction and/or does anyone know why I get this reaction? Could it be a die-off reaction because I really don't know exactly what milk thistle does? there are ao many vague sites about it that really contradict each other. My LLMD has never heard of such a reaction, but then again, that statement seems to be common with my symptoms. The other things that have increased my symptoms other then milk thistle are: vitamin c, cholrella, vitamins like d and e but not really sure if those are a direct cause. The vitamin c, chorella and milk thistle are definite causes of increase in symptoms. No pattern or direct correlation is prevelant unless, someone could shed some light on this. Thank you for all your help. Trust me it is greatly appreciated.

- There are many other liver support measures. You might do best consulting a LL ND (naturopathic doctor) or a LL acupuncturist (L.Ac.) for support measures.
I can't read your post, so I'm going just on the subject heading. It is not at all unheard of for someone to have a strong reaction to Milk Thistle.
Milk Thistle can be too strong for some people who are more sensitive. I'm thinking Bupleurum might be a good one, or Schizandra (Schisandra), or . . . .
Most herbs are usually in a formula - and it would be best to have guidance from a LL ND or LL L.Ac. who has many years for formal training, as well as one who is Lyme Literate.
You need a liver support that will protect from toxins and chemicals, as well as nourish.
You might also check other ingredients in supplements that aren't working for you. Always get the purest you can find.
You might ask your LLMD and your local lyme support groups for names of any LLND, LL L.Ac.s
It is important, however, to know that lyme - and treatment - just does make us feel "icky to the max" and we need to be careful not to attribute the ills of lyme to everything we take (within reason, of course).
Quite literally, symptoms can shift all over the place a hundred times a day - until one is somewhat advanced into the timeline of lyme treatment. It's just up and down and all around - as the "new normal" - and it's impossible to attribute each shift to anyone thing other than just the way this all works.
And, sometimes, we made just need more water, different foods, or to lie down for a while. Lyme changes a lot about how our bodies react.
Most supplements will not necessary make us feel better right away and we will still feel sick when on them, as long as lyme is in the picture. Their main goal is to nourish & protect our body. Improvement is usually seen over time. Still, you should have at least a subtle sense of increased centeredness, or balance.
I can tell if a formula seems to resonate with me. And, I can tell immediately if it's too energizing or sedating for me. It's a very fine line in what I can tolerate.
I've always felt better solid support with Bupleurum formulas, though. In fact, it's really quite a remarkable herb.
At least with support supplements (as opposed to those with a more antimicrobial action), there is no need to stick with a supplement that is SUPPOSED to be good if you have difficultly.
Regarding support, there are thousands of choices and combinations. That is why a seasoned LL ND or LL L.Ac. is best consulted. There is so much more to this.
Good luck. -

There are some supplements for liver support that have been designed not to interact poorly with anything else in your body.
L, Ls and Lb are from www.systemicformulas.com The liver has 3 parts or lobes and each of the above formulas supports a different lobe.
