I am on Cholestramine 4 times a day. It is suppose to bind with the neurotoxins in my brain and then release thru my digestive system. I've used up one can and am now I'm on my 2nd. My Dr. warned my about herx- like symptoms, but so far the only side affect I'm having is insomnia, which I will hope go away soon. This is a recommended Detox treatment. Has anyone else had any experience with it...any good results? I'm trying it because my neuro lyme is very bad. I also do Hot yoga, and colonics for detox.

I didn't know it came in a can. Mine is in packages.
I love it. But I only take it every 3 days. Hope it gets rid of all this excess baggage I now pack around too....

i took it for several months. i had increased problems with constipation but nothing else.
since, i didn't see any help i let it go. my doc prescribed it for mold.
now that we know about the lyme i am back on it while taking the buhner herbs.
i am taking the pill form. Welchol. my biggest problem is taking it away from all the other things i am taking. so, i take it only once a day which is not as helpful.
while i don't "see" any results i believe its important for the neurotoxins so i keep taking it when i can fit it in.

- jasek,
Cholestyramine can pull out needed magnesium. Supplementing with magnesium - away from the cholestyramine (and on the days off from that) is very important. One aspect of magnesium deficiency is insomnia.
minerva,
Magnesium depletion can result in constipation. -

I was on cholestyramine 3 times 6 tablets after a bad exposure to mold and toxins. Now I take one 600 mg capsule a day for maintenance at night. I take it together with my magnesium cream. Keebler thanks for the info.Do I have to take the cream away from the cholestyramine? But the cream is on the skin, mainly legs.

I had great results with it clearing my brain but gave me severe constipation and abdominal pain (even with supplementing high doses of magnesium) I have had to stop for the moment. Once things normalise I will go back on it in lighter doses as I definitely see the benefits.

That is what I am looking for, clearing my brain.I'm feeling very positive about this. I've never heard of magnesium cream, still wondering if I should up my mag. or if 400 mg is enough...Keebler? My Dr. said I may be on it for up to 2-3 mo. I don't care if it helps and with this good feedback I feel I'm on the right path.

Cholestyramine was the most effective detox protocol my daughter has ever had. She became pretty much symptom-free; but once she stopped, the symptoms slowly returned as toxins once again accumulated.
I can't get her to try it again because it is such a difficult protocol to work in with all other meds. She did not have the same results when she cut down the doses. Pinelady, I would love to hear how you dose it.
We know one young man who has the mold susceptibility, who who takes it every time he gets hit with mold or a lyme flare, and it keeps him functioning.

I agree about trying to time all the meds. My Dr. said I can eat and take meds 1/2 hr. after taking the Chol. I am never able to keep it on a regular schedule. Sometimes it's 3 hr., sometimes it's 6 hrs. apart. Sometimes I eat 1/2 hr. before taking it. Since it take it ev. day 4 times how far apart should my magnesium be taken from the night doesage?

I was on it 1x a day for awhile and felt worse. My LD had me stop for awhile.
If you take any meds or supps, I don't see how you can fit it in. I was told not to take it at least 2hrs after taking meds, supps, or eating????

Mine comes in individual packages and you mix with liquid. I do 2pks @ noon.
Up at 6 for am meds/ noon / pm meds.
I don't worry so much about working around food, but I don't want to pull meds out, so I just do the best I can.

I just started it about a week+ ago, and am ramping today up to a full scoop. The only issue I've having is juggling supplements and meds around it (nothing 1 hour before, nothing 4 hours after). I've not noticed any bad side effects so far.

Mine come in single serve packets, really doesn't say.
Mine contains some sucrose, but not artificial sweetner. I've heard you can get it compounded.

I spoke to a pharmacy and they said there is a generic kind that comes in a tub and is sugar free. The said have your doctor write the prescription for "sugar free" cholestyramine. I spoke to Pierce Apothecary.
I have used the cholestyramine that comes in the packets but I don't like that it has sugar in it. I can't tell if it helps. I've never taken more than 1 per day.

"sugar free" might mean with aspartame.....which would be worse.

Indeed, the sugar-free version DOES contain aspartame.
However, in USA you can get it au naturel from a compounding I was told.
