Anything natural to take before antibiotics to heal and protect stomach lining? Gastritis is no fun at all!
PCP prescribed Carafate but I hate taking another med, especially since Keebler said it contains aluminum. I have only been taking it a few days, but it is not helping either.
Thanks, Jennie

- Have you used DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice)? Slippery Elm bark? Marshmallow Root?
A small amount of L-Glutamine can be very helpful (not too much, though, as it can cause hyper-excitability in the brain when converted to glutamic acid).

It's not a natural supplement, but Pariet (PPI)was the medicine I relied on the most for relief. I also found it had very few if any side effects. Over the counter ranitidine helps in a pinch.

I have been on omeprazole for a couple of weeks with no relief. I also tried OTC ranitidine.
Did you take your PPI daily or just as needed?

Hi Keebler.
I tried DGL a few months back but probably didn't use it long enough to make a difference. It tastes horrible.
Does DGL, slippery elm, etc. protect stomach from abx or treat gastritis discomfort?
I am trying to heal my gut and prevent this from happening again.
Thanks!

DGL should help as can glutamine. Take DGL before meals by about 1/2 hour just like you would with any PPI. If you have h.pylori mastic gum might help, I would get evaluated by a GI and probably take a break from the antibiotics as well. If you have reflux or gastitis avoid peppermint oil and ginger as they can make it worse. DGL when taken daily for a few weeks can have the same healing affect that carafate does. FYI the aluminum is a binding agent just like magnesium stearate and is ok.

I only took the PPI as needed which at times was daily.. I should also say that I tried many natural remedies as well but nothing would even touch the pain I was having.

I've been trying DGL. It seems to help, at least a little bit. If the taste is a problem, try the chocolate one from Enzymatic Therapy. It sort of has a tootsie roll flavor, kinda.
I'm also trying Pepzin (zinc + carnosine), but not sure if that will do a whole lot.

I get marshmellow from vitacost. It coats the stomach. Slippery elm is another one to help the stomach.

Ok...I am ready to bring out the big guns and blast this gastritis to the moon!
I will definitely get the chocolate DGL (sounds yummy). I would also like to add mastic gum, get as H. pylori preventative. Can I take both of these together?
Would it help even more to add marshmallow root and slippery elm to the above?
Gotta get over this and back on lyme treatment ASAP.
Thanks!

Ouch !
Yes, you can take those together. Caution, if you did not like the taste of DGL, chocolate may be kinder but it is not going to taste yummy, it will still taste like licorice. But it works.
Try this combination. there are similar products to this elsewhere, too.

DGL helps for sure, but it should be taken half hour before eating and a half hour before bed times and chewed well. The saliva is what activates it.
The best thing for soothing the stomach is a tea with slippery elm and marshmallow. You can just buy the capsules of each.
I will empty 4 slippery elm capsules and 2 marshmallow capsules into a mug and poor very hot almost boiling water over it. Mix it up, and drink when its cool enough.

I took all listed above and took Coconut water every day as well. I give most of the credit to coconut water. So soothing and relieving.
I went from belching no-stop to not belching at all. Docs would blame it on anxiety and not want to fix me, so I fixed it myself.
Manuka honey kills h pylori if you are concerned.
I don't have much respect for most GI docs. A bunch of crooks who try to kick you out of the office with a PPI. I guess you can get a scope if you want. I was really sick before my scope so I just cancelled it and put everything in my hands.

Kday,
does manuka honey mess with yeast real bad?
I really don't have much of a yeast issue. And I want to keep it that way. Ha
but I keep hearing about honeys powerful abilities (especially when mixed with lemon water and cayanne pepper)

It's not natural, but I once used pantoprazole for stomach acid/gastro issues while I was on doxy.
I took one pill each morning about 30 minutes before breakfast. It helped 100%!
