My daughter has been in treatment for 6 months. She started on mino, it didn't work and she tanked too much. We changed LLMD's who began her on Clarithromyacin. She still didn't do well. She changed her to doxy, started her at a very low dose (50 mg 2x every other day) and she began to show major improvements.
She had increased energy and her symptoms eased up considerably. 6 weeks ago she quit taking doxy so that she could enjoy some of the sun this summer. She has gone downhill ever since.
So, she spoke to her LLMD and is going to start back on doxy this week. Heck with the sun!
The doxy dosage was so low, but seemed to work very well. LLMD wants to try a higher dosage.
What I am wondering is why would she do so well on such a low dose of doxy, but do so poorly on a dose of clarithromyacin/mino? She starts all new abx with very low doses and gradually builds them up.
Does she do poorly on some meds because they are killing more bugs than her system can handle? Or are certain drugs more effective even at very low doses?
Or does she detox better on some drugs than others?
Anyone?

Doxy is the drug of choice for Lyme with Erlichia co-infection. It may be that her Erlichia load was pretty high and causing many of her symptoms. Maybe that needed to be addressed.
It could easily be what you are suggesting. Sometimes too much die-off causes a major herx/crash, and a smaller dose is more tolerable.
Early in treatment, I took pediatric doses of almost all my meds and herxed like crazy. I was really infected. Now, I can handle higher doses with less herxing, as my infection load is reduced.
How much and what medications to take are a judgement call. Pay attention to what works. You may not always know the reason why. And what meds work best will change over the course of treatment.
Sorry she'll miss out on the sun, but it's worth it to feel better!!

my daughter is also currently taking doxy. She has tolerated it fairly well and we see some improvement. She also participates in swim team so she spends a great deal of time outdoors in the pool for practice. It doesn't seem to bother her too much.
It is hard to know the answer as to which med combo is best for your child. I go by what I observe as well as what she tells me. I have to remember that what works for my lyme doesn't necessarily work for her.
I personally don't tolerate clarithromycin very well...but it sure does kill the Bb.
It is hard to watch your child go through this. I wish I had a wise answer for you but I don't. I'm just another mom trying to help her child get through this.
