I just started Zhang's protocol yesterday and I was wondering if anyone else out there has issues tolerating the allicin? The smell is just way too much for me. It repeated on me all day until it made me so nauseous that I vomited. Is this normal in the beginning? Will I eventually get used to it?

I could not tolerate it. I took it for a month and I have read (somewhere!) that is about the limit anyone can stand it.
Even today I cannot tolerate the smell - just want to gag.

I took zhang's herbs for five months for lyme and 8 months for bartonella. I did not get better but I was not using abx with them.
I think they are extremely expensive for the value you get out of them.

If you are treating lyme, I bought grapefruit seed extract in capsules and took 1000mg a day. I also bought TOA free cat's claw in capsules (not samento) and took 1200mg a day. I did this after several months of Ketek which knocked the lyme down. Now lyme is not the problem (bart is) . . knock on wood it does not resurface.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who can't tolerate it. My stomach is burning like crazy and this is only day #2! I'm doing Zhang's herbs along with abx, so we'll see what happens!

What is the grapefruit seed extract for? I might have to add it to my regimen!

Good luck knocking out that bart!!!

I would NOT take grapefruit seed extract right now. GSE can burn and your stomach. You probably would not tolerate that now as you said your stomach burns from the garlic.

GSE is to help break up the cyst form. Allicin also does a bit in that department to help break down the biofilm around the cyst form of lyme.

I would STOP the allicin for a while. Get some DGL (a special kind of licorice) and that sooth soothe your stomach.

Did you start with just ONE allicin capsule for the day? With food?

Are you also taking the Circulation P capsules and AI#1? Those help balance the effect of allicin.

I got to where I could take the full dose on an empty stomach but it's always good to start with food to get the body used to it.

I'd stop it for a while and try again when your stomach feels better - with just ONE allicin in the middle of lunch.

ODOR? when I was on this it the odor was very noticeable to others but I never smelled it on myself. A taxi driver once commented - and that was just when I began it with a small dose.

As I can't usually get out I didn't mind the odor, really because I saw such great progress with it. And, if I was going to be around others I just said I had a Greek salad for lunch.

I did very well for the two short time periods of several months each when I did this protocol. VERY well. This was without antibiotics for the most part. I miss how well I was when I did this. I just stopped far too soon.

That was very much worth smelling of garlic. I stopped only due to finances (although I found it all a fair price for a quality product that is labor intensive).

CHLOROPHYLL will help reduce the odor. It's very good for us in many ways.

DGL - To help your stomach. Most natural foods markets and vitamin shops carry this. It can be taken while on this protocol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deglycyrrhizinated_licorice

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice, also known as de-glycyrrhizinated licorice, or commonly referred to by the acronym DGL, is typically used as an herbal supplement in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is made from licorice from which the glycyrrhizin has been removed.

The usual dosage is 760 mg, chewed, 20 minutes before a meal. Studies of DGL in humans and animals against placebos showed that DGL significantly reduced the size of gastric ulcers and hastened healing, with 44% of the subjects obtaining complete healing, as opposed to 6% of the control group.

DGL has also been found to be an effective treatment for duodenal ulcers. In another study a group of 40 patients who had duodenal ulcers for 4-12 years were treated with 3 grams of DGL a day for 8 weeks, or 4.5 grams a day for 12 weeks, with all subjects showing vast improvement, with the higher dosage being the most significant.

An additional study shows that DGL's therapeutic effect is equal to the effect of cimetidine (Tagamet). . . .

. . . There are no known drug interactions with drugs used to treat ulcers. In Europe, South Africa, and Canada, DGL is marketed in a medicinal preparation called Caved-S. In the U.S., DGL is marketed as a herbal supplement.

DGL has also been reported to help treat aphthous ulcers (canker sores).[1]

LICORICE ROOT (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

WHAT IT DOES: Licorice root is sweet in taste and cooling in action. It detoxifies poisons from the blood and liver, and reduces general inflammation and pain.

It moistens and heals the lungs and digestive tract.

Excerpt:

. . . Almost 50 years ago, a scientist by the name of Revers reported that licorice paste reduced abdominal symptoms and caused radiographic evidence of ulcer healing.

However, about 20% of patients developed edema, headache and other symptoms due to overdose, leading to a loss of enthusiasm (Schambelan, 1994).

This led to the development of DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), a form of licorice that does not contain the agents responsible for the side effects such as electrolyte changes.

The de-acidified DGL tablet or capsule form used in Europe and America is therefore devoid of any major side effects, and is effective for healing the intestinal membranes. . . .

Keebler - thank you so much for all this great information!! I actually am taking 2 allicin pills with each meal (3x/day). It's only day two but wreaked havoc on my stomach already! Perhaps I should cut down on it a bit until I build up my tolerance! I will try DGL and Chlorophyl. I do not mind smelling if it will make me feel better!!! I can smell it on myself which increases my nausea!!

If you are just beginning this, after a short rest, I would cut back to one allicin a day for a week, and increase to two for a week and take it from there.

To help with nausea, GINGER capsules may be just the ticket. DGL will help that also.

I never got nausea from allicin but it may be the combination with the antibiotics and a bit of a herx. I do have a different kind of constant nausea from an inner ear bone problem, though, so both Ginger and DGL help that.
