My ID doc wants me to try a combination of a Nasacort steroid spray and cycle with Afrin spray. I'm having serious ear blockage and water on the ears. He said my ear drum seems like it's bulging and it's due to Mycoplasma Pneumonia still. My ears feel so plugged that it's driving me crazy.
Is a nasal spray really that bad? He said it could open up my sinuses more and possibly allow some drainage in my ear tubes. I gotta do something. Saline spray just isn't doing much for my nose. Posts: 7545 | From The 5th Dimension - The Twilight Zone | Registered: Mar 2008

I've heard that we can't use any steroid ever. Even topical--what have other heard?

- True, steroids ONLY to if in a life-threatening (or vision, etc.) situation and then with special attention to antibiotics, but abx would not affect viruses - so if a virus were active, steroids would allow that to get stronger.
Better choices:
* NETI POT - Search Google and YouTube - It's sea salt, but better than a nasal spray as you get a far better irrigation of the sinus terrain by using a Neti Pot for a few minutes. Much better than a saline spray.

My LLMD said not problem with nasal steroid sprays.
I have to take it on a daily basis - Veramyst. I also do the net-pot and other natural nasal sprays but that is not enough for me. If I don't do the Veramyst I end up with nasty sinus infections and then have to change up my abx.'s
According to my LLMD such a tiny amount actually gets into the blood stream that the body does not even recognize it. I have been on Veramyst for almost a year with no problem.

It says online the steroid is not systemic in anyway. I'm not sure I have a choice. I'm forced to move to another Abx due to this issue so what's the worst of 2 evils? I will try the neti-pot again, but I have a deviated septum so it's hard.
That's good to hear TriGal2. Posts: 7545 | From The 5th Dimension - The Twilight Zone | Registered: Mar 2008

- "It says online the steroid is not systemic in anyway."
Do not believe that. It is absorbed. Even if it could magically stay in the sinus tissue (which it can't), even with nasal tissue, steroids can cause damage there and that greatly affects overall health.
Think of those who sniff cocaine. That does not stay in the nasal passages. Anything we ingest, put on our skin or put up our noses get absorbed.
I had a couple steroid shots in my feet and was told "it stays right there, does not get absorbed" and they were wrong. I suffered horrendous problems. Both times I thought I had no other choice but I did not know about bartonella then and how that affects feet.
Same with one asthma inhaler. I was told it was not systemic. It took me six months to get my body calmed down from that. I wanted to go to the ER for an antidote nearly everyday for 6 straight months. But someone wise taught me that they would not be able to help me and I just had to wait it out. A year later, I was diagnosed with lyme. It all made more sense.
And - also before I knew about lyme, etc, I also used many nasal sprays. They just made things worse, even while on standard abx for sinus infections. The best thing I ever did was to get off of nasal sprays.
Regular use of the NETI POT really does help.
Please try the OLE spray first. There is likely fungal &/or viral activity and abx will do nothing to help that and steroids can make it worse.
OLE will help against a wide range of infections. Systemically, too, OLE capsules can help. Allicin, too.
. . . Corticosteroids can last in the body for months, usually around 6 months. In many bacterial infections such as LD, damage can be done. . . . -

I experienced facial tingling and twitching while using it. I used it for a couple months early on when my sinuses were a total disaster.
And all my sinus issues cleared up on long term Diflucan.
My $ bets it's fungal also
Afrin is a very effective decongestant, and one of the only ones that won't seriously raise your blood pressure.
Maybe you can get away with just using Afrin as a decongestant and Xlear (which works way better than plain saline - the Xylitol in it prevents allergans from sticking to your sinuses).

When my allergies get out of control my LLMD said that it is fine to use Nasonex (similar to Nasacort). These nasal sprays are low dose and they work great to decrease inflammation locally. They are non-addictive so you can stop as soon as you feel better.
Be careful with Afrin, do not take it more often than your doctor instructed. It can be addictive, overuse causes rebound symptoms (aka you feel worse than when you started) so don't try to treat yourself by taking it daily. Listen to your doctor for this one.
Hope this combo helps relieve some of your symptoms Seek. Head symptoms are most miserable, they affect everything!
