I am Polish, but leaving in Belgium. I have been diagnosed with Lyme disease in April 2010 with ELISA test done in Poland, the results: IGM:22, IGG:0,25. The heavy symptoms (tiredness, pain in the muscles and joints) I have had since October 2009.

Since the diagnosis, I have been taking:
Amoxicillin for 30 days and straight after that, Tetracycline and Metronizadol for 7 days once a month with 3 week break in between.

In the meantime I consulted 2 other infectious diseases doctors. As a result, I have done two additional ELISA tests, which gave negative results for Lyme. The doctors say I am healthy, despite my symptoms. However, the tests were taken in between the antibiotics (during the 3 week break).

My current doctor in Belgium does not think I should do any other exams. I should just continue with antibiotics.

Since the antibiotics treatment is long, I would like to be sure what I'm curing, therefore would like to make additional, confirmatory exams, to be sure I have Lyme.

Do you maybe know what additional exams I could make (LTT, CD-57, PCR, W-B) while taking antibiotics (so the results would not be destorted by the antibiotics)? I've heard that PCR can be made, but the test is not considered very effective.

I will be VERY grateful for your help!

You need to take the meds until you HAVE NO SYMPTOMS. NO testing is needed while going through treatment.

The ELISA is fraught with false negatives anyway, so that one is OUT.

When you say you are taking a 3 wk break, do you mean you are taking NO antibiotics during that time???? If so, that will allow the spirochetes to multiply bigtime.

Very few of us here take ANY Lyme tests while going thru treatment. It just is not necessary.

Hi!

Thanks a lot for your messages!

I would like to take a confirmatory test, as I do not want to be misdiagnosed.

I have strong symptoms corresponding to Lyme (extreme fatigue, pain in the muscles and joints, brain fog) and ELISA positive, however with very low IGG (0,25).

But as ELISA gives also false positives (e.g. when IGG level is zero), I'm not 100% sure that I have Lyme.

Therefore, I want to take a confirmatory test without stopping the antibiotics' treatment, as do not want to delay the cure, in case I have Lyme.

Yes, during this 3 week break I do not take any antibiotics. But I'm looking also for another Lyme disease doctor, to get a 2nd, actually it would be already the 5th doctor's opinion:)

Thanks a lot!
Gosia

A FALSE POSITIVE on an ELISA is like a 1% chance.

Hope you find the 5th opinion.
