I had an old case of EBV that was reactivated 3 dr's told me that it is no longer contagious. I tend to believe them, otherwise my son would have gotten it. He is fine. I've had it for awhile, or so they tell me. I didn't even know I had it in the first place.
I can only speak for EBV...

What about shingles? When the chicken pox virus is re-activated, the person with shingles is contagious for a period of time ... I would take precautions. I also have reactivated viruses, and when I'm in a flare, I take extra precautions in cooking for my son. But I always am aware of hygiene and cleanliness, especially around food. Just in case ...

I JUST asked this question at my last appt. LLMD said sure, there is always the possibility. That's about as straight an answer as I got. He said not to worry too much about passing anything on, that most adults have all been exposed to these viruses anyway and that normal immune systems keep these problems in check.

I've been ill for almost 7 years, and best we can tell I am battling various reactivated pathogens. We know for sure that Coxsackie B is one of them, and it is highly probable that HHV-6 is another. My family is totally healthy.

I believe that a steroid shot to my knee reactivated a bacterial pathogen. Then my immune system took a hit, and the viruses reactivated. So, yes, I do think there is an immune problem of some sort. Hopefully, if we can beat back enough of the pathogens, the immune system will recover and keep them in the latent state.

that was my question, how do I know my neuro. problems are specifically from lyme and not from the reactivated HHV-6 virus which causes neuro. symptoms?? I'd like to be tested for CPN as well b/c I heard this causes MS-like symptoms too.
LLMD said he would worry about treating viruses later on in treatment if they had not resolved by then. I'm going to ask him about CPN at the next visit.

jwall~ You won't know unless you do some testing. My basic approach is to test for many different pathogens and treat what looks to be most obviously wrong.
You cannot tell by symptoms which pathogen you are dealing with.

Yes...the body has to choose which pathway to take to fight pathogens...Th1 or Th2 (actually there is a Th3). Some require a Th1 pathway to erradicate the "offender" and others require a Th2 pathway.
They can't be on simultaneously.
It depends on which pathogen the body deems the greatest threat to life - at the present time.
Oftentimes, when a lyme patient gets the "flu", the lyme symptoms ebate.
And in pregnancy when our immune system takes a HUGE shift so we don't "destroy" the "unlike us" fetus.
