We suspect my 4 yr. old son has lyme. His labcorp WB did not come back positive, but IGG bands 41 and 39 were abnormal (I guess according to Igenex, this would be positive)...he has had a few known tick bites and has had clinical symptoms for over a year now. My LLMD says he has lyme and to have him treated immediatelyj and not to bother with the Igenex test.

My LLMD doesn't treat under the age of 8, but we were able to find a local LLMD to treat him. She is putting him on amoxicillin.

I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help support his tummy during this time?? I will be adding probiotics and yogurt/kefir. He doesnt' like yogurt, but somehow i'll try to get him to eat it. Anything else that you would recommend I do for him?

In addition, if he has bartonella, would amoxicillin alone eradicate it?

Thank you!

I give my son Florastor (S. Boulardii) and milk thistle (for liver support) at the same time as his probiotics. I mix everything in his juice or vitamin water.

I don't think amoxicillin treats Bartonella. I think I've read that Bactrim, Rifampin, and Azithromycin are used. My son isn't being treated for Bartonella though, so I don't have experience in dealing with it.

Thank you! I forgot about milk thistle...is there a special dose for children?

I'm not positive my son has bartonella, but his symptoms seem more like bartonella than lyme. I wonder if I should have a test run? My LLMD said he would consult with the local LLMD on my son's meds, so it may be switched around.

I hate to treat him with all these antibiotics if he does not have bart. I still don't have the confidence that I'm making the right decision treating him for lyme, but I trust my LLMDs opinion. And my son has quite a few clincial symptoms and developed a huge lesion and rash after his 3rd tick bite in June. he was put on 3 weeks of amoxicillin at the time, but LLMD said it was not enough. He had been having lyme symptoms for over a year before that 3rd bite...I was sick too, but we didn't know I had lyme until just recently. I would never have connected his symptoms to lyme.

The local LLMD said that the risk of taking 4 months (possibly more) of antibiotics is slim, but the risk of not treating lyme is great. I agree, but I hate to have my baby go through this very unpleasant experience.

Thank you for the advice!! Hope your son is doing better.

jwall,

please read one of my previous posts...

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/1/92125?

"My daughter is 14 and we were at her first LLMD appt. today. She had lyme in 2003, was treated by her pediatrician with 3 weeks of Amoxy and has had weird stretch marks and streaks and rashes since then but no symptoms (or so I thought).

I got Lyme last April and found this site which has helped me sooo much! I have learned and learned and figured out that I have Bartonella and maybe Babesia and my daughter's markings are also Bartonella.

At my daughter's appt. today, the doctor confirmed that she must still have lyme as 3 weeks is not long enough to kill it (only to keep it dormant within her) and has Bart too.

Probably the worst thing that's happened without any doc believing me that it could be lyme related is that she's had terrible acid reflux and was diagnosed last spring with barrett's esophagus. Precancerous cells! That's scary stuff! Even dormant, lyme will mess with you.

Our LLMD said that Bart needs to be treated before the Lyme is treated. He started her on Rifampin and Azithromycin. She'll start it tomorrow.

I'm scared too by what the medicine might stir up for her, but I'm even more scared about what would happen if we were NOT to attack these bad guys in her. This time, I want them dead, not just hiding."

jwall, please get your son treated. It's not something to mess with.

Thank you for the advice 17hens! We started him tonight on amoxicillin. I will talk to my LLMD next week and he said he would consult with the local LLMD about what meds my son should be on. I am sure he will switch his meds around...or advise the local LLMD to do so. I am so grateful to have found 2 compassionate doctors so willing to help us!

I worry about him a lot. We'll see how he handles treatment. I feel like I am lucky that I figured it out before going years and years. Both doctors said children are resilient and that he'll be fine. I just worry about yeast and what if the antibiotics turn his adult teeth yellow? Just things like that...

I truly hope your daughter has a speedy recovery now that she is getting solid treatment. I know you are so relieved to finally understand what has been causing her acid reflux for all these years.

I am so sick, so I know this is nothing to mess around with...my LLMDs words exactly. Thank you!
