Topic: black mold - how do you know if it's in your mattress?

I have had throat problems lately and my homeopathic practitioner thinks I have been exposed to black mold - perhaps in my bedroom.
I recall someone had it in their mattress and I am wondering how this was discovered? Did you have to cut open the mattress? Was it just under the top layer or deep inside?
Thanks,

- It's been found primary in the zippered, inflatable mattresses. One brand, particularly. They corrected the problem but, to do so, added antifungal chemicals to the mattress.
Do not open up without special precautions as, if mold is there, it can release spores that will go all over, and into air vents, etc.
Contact your local chapter of the American Lung Association for details and guidance, not just about a potential problem with the mattress, but about how you might evaluate for this black mold called
Stacky Bottrus. I'll be back with the correct spelling. -
Well, I thought I could find this but it's not anywhere logical in my computer files. I did quite a bit of study on this a while back. Well, with the Lung Association - and even googling it spelled wrong, with "mold" as the cross search, you should still find lots of information.
Your lung association can lead you to mold evaluation and remediation sources.
Good luck. -

Do you know which brands of mattresses have be linked to mold, and which are known to have been sprayed with chemicals?

- Well, now ALL mattresses sold are sprayed with chemicals but mostly due to fire retardant laws. I don't know if all contain antifungal agents.
Some organic mattress may somehow get around the chemical bath but, by law, mattresses sold must be doused with fire retardants. And this is causes another horrible set of problems.
I hesitate to post the mattress company as I'm not sure. It is one of those that you dial to increase or decrease the air inside. The mattresses in question were on the market a few years ago.
I'll look again to see if I can find the news articles about that. I had it all chronicled but organization is far from my strong suit. -

- Well, I can't find the full file on this kind of mold, but I did find reference to the mattress problem: ------------------------
Sept. 2010 note: Problem with all the links. They no longer work. You can use the titles to search Google for the top article
And you can use the dates to search the archives for the two lower links from the main source:

I had a Select Comfort mattress. I unzipped it, the LIFTED THE FOAM, and underneath the foam, there was mold. I got my money back even though the bed was five years old. I was talking to the class action lawsuit lawyers at the time.
I went through a horrible detox when I got rid of the mattress. It happened on its own. I had to take a lot of binders. It was as bad as Lyme treatment.
It happened right before I went to Germany and I think the detox IV's over there helped.

Thanks for your responses. I think I may have figured out where it could be...we shall see. I think it could be in my shower, which, by the way, is cleaned regularly...the problem is that the tiles are black and the grout is dark gray, so it would be very easy to miss some mold growing.
My practitioner has me on a homeopathic remedy for the mold exposure and my throat hoarseness seems to be going away already after only a few days of taking it (after having the throat issue for 4 months). It will be nice to get my normal voice back!

- If this is that particular kind of black mold, it will not do to just wash the surface, or even replace the grout. It needs to be handled behind the walls.
You would need professional assessment.
Do NOT open up any mattress without first seeking professional guidance on how to do that safely.
Call your local American Lung Association on Tuesday morning. First thing. -
