- Weight gain is very common with lyme and with other infections.
#1: Treat infection(s). When infections are all addressed and remission is achieved, many find that the weight nearly disappears (as long as good health habits are in place).
At the thread below, there's a whole book and many medical abstracts detailing the connection between infections and weight gain - along with other articles and suggestions for adrenal support that can help:

Hockey22,
I had a sudden weight gain of about 30 pounds before I was finally diagnosed. I had coincidentally quit smoking when some of my first Lyme symptoms started, so the weight gain was easily overlooked. I had always kept a heathy low carb diet, but kept gaining weight maxing out last December 2009 at 200 lbs. I think they refer to this as leaky gut syndrone.
I started treatment early March and dropped 10 lbs of bloat in the first month, and continued to drop steady rate since. So far I've lost about 25 lbs., and my GI issues have improved significantly.

Thank you! yes I was an excercise nut until a few months ago when I just couldnt because of it causing flare-ups, but I am at just a few pounds shy of 200 pounds, and i'm embarassed, and dont have an appetite to even eat much. I just hope I start losing some of this soon, and wasn't sure if it would be hard, or how long i'd have to wait..of course being nausous and laying down all day makes it tough to be active!

I gained 70 lbs the first year I was really sick with lyme despite aerobics 3x per week and a very low calorie diet. I also had very little appetite. I can tell you that when I'm gaining weight much of it is initially non pitting edema because it fluctuates for several days before it settles. My blood pressure drops usually during an episode of weight gain and my appetite declines considerably.
Still struggling with weight many years later. I'm finally working on the issues that I mention below:
From a recent previous post of mine.
In addition to the cortisol issue that Keebler mentions, the toxins from die-off create a cascade of hormonal changes that can cause significant weight gain.
Leptin resistence is a very big issue along with insulin resistance and other hormonal changes. Non-pitting edema can also be part of the picture as a result of bartonella or mycoplasma.
from: The Biotoxin and Neurotoxin Pathway http://www.biotoxin.info/biochemistry Stage 2: Cytokine Effects The activated fat cells start to produce more leptin, which leads to weight gain that is unresponsive to diet or exercise.
Remember that the fat cells are also pumping out cytokines, this overload starts to block or damage the leptin receptors in the hypothalamus.
