My sister contracted Lyme disease four or five years ago, and I have always viewed her struggle as one of the most painful yet inspiring things I have ever witnessed. Lucky enough to have a doctor who was willing to learn about the condition and access to top specialists, she's now nearly recovered and one of the most amazing human beings I have ever come in contact with.
Not surprisingly, when I found a tick in my leg about a year ago, I panicked. I went running (literally) to my mother, who took me to the general practitioner my sister and I were seeing. I had some tests done, though I'm not sure they ran all of them. Everything came back negative.
This was in Massachusetts. Seven months ago, I moved down here to New Orleans. As time passed, I very gradually began experiencing symptoms. I was passing each one off individually as stress or lack of sleep. It took some time before I realized they could very easily all be connected.
Out of the past three weeks, I have spent about a quarter of the days unable to get out of bed, my hair is falling out, and a weekly chiropractic adjustment on my neck hasn't helped it. I shouldn't bother listing the ways everything hurts. You guys already know. Basically, I've been forced to realize that this is definitely not just stress.
So getting to my point finally, I need to find a general practitioner relatively nearby who'll be tolerant of Lyme as a potential diagnosis. I'm okay with driving six hours to see a specialist, but I also need a regular doctor who will recognize it as a legitimate condition and be aware of how it might interact with other health issues that may occur down the line.

There is the MD in *** Dr. F. Sometimes they say they aren't taking new patients, and sometimes they are. I haven't seen him but know others who have. Dr. F apparently consulted on the President Bush case when he came down with Lyme.
